Raleigh, NC or Spokane, WA

I'm going to a week long conference for work in September. I can either go to Raleigh, NC on Sept. 12-15, or Spokane, WA on Sept. 26-29.
The only thing I know about Raleigh is that's where the Hurricanes and NCSU are. The only thing I know about Spokane is that it's in eastern Washington. Never been to either city.
Pro's and con's of each? Which one should I choose?

I was in Raleigh this week. Pretty good restaurants, NC State has a nice campus and the weather will be better than Spokane

Tri-city area >>>>>>>>>>>> the pits of non coastal WA.

I've been to Raleigh. It's nothing special. Can't imagine it being that great in September.
Never been to Spokane, so that'd be my choice. It may be lame, but it's somewhere new.

I've heard Spokane is a cool city and you're within a decent drive to Coeur d'Alene, Missoula, etc. if you can find the time. You would be pretty close to the Rockies and that is a gorgeous area. Weather should be fine at that time of year.
Edit: just saw your reply...I have always heard good things about Spokane being a fun city, though Raleigh area would be a safer bet.

I'm already planning a vacation to Seattle sometime in September, so that may make my decision for me. But if my vacation isn't during one of those two weeks, I'd prefer to go to the better city. Not too interested about the surrounding area, since I won't have much time to explore. Most of my free time will probably be spent walking around, eating, and drinking.

Spokane sucks. East Washington sucks, period. Raleigh is the only option.

hit up Spokane, bring a passport, and you could end up in Vancouver for the day

Not really comparable areas at all. Raleigh-Durham is in the Piedmont region of NC has about 1.7 million, Spokane is in the mountains of eastern Washington, with about 200k. For scenery Spokane is gorgeous.

He's going to a conference. How the hell is he going to make a seven hour drive to a place "for the day"?

Cant really speak for Spokane but I love Raleigh. Raleigh Beer Garden is great. If you have time drive to Durham and go eat at a place called Bull City Burger and Brewery. Get the bacon marmalade topping.

Could do Vancouver one day and Billings, MT the next.

Yeah, a lot of people don't realize that the eastern half of Washington goes abruptly into badlands and is just like Idaho and Montana. The kick-arse, good weathered parts of it are on the west.
Nonetheless, Raleigh doesn't sound particularly appealing to me.

Spokane is a high desert town in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty but lots more to do in Raleigh

Billings is 8 hours from Spokane in the other direction.
To visit both from Spokane would require 30 hours of drive time. It's doable, but he's going to need to take some extra days to do something like that. Especially since there are no flights that get you from MGM to GEG or back in less than three segments. That's going to burn up 20-25 more hours in flight/airport time.
ETA - That being said, I'd choose Spokane without even hesitating. Raleigh is fine, but it's just like a dozen other "new south" cities.
