If you were moving to one of these areas just to start over, which is the best, Alpharetta, Athens, Marietta, or Norcross? Factors include cost of living, jobs, schools, and crime rate.

Well Alpharetta and Norcross are going to have the highest cost of living followed by Marietta . they will also have the best schools from your list. They will most likely have the best job options. They will also have the lowest crime rate. Athens will be the opposite of those.
Alpharetta/Norcross tie
Marietta
Athens
Are you just interested in the north side? The south side, Newnan and Sharpsburg are growing very quickly. They don't have the amenities of those north side cities but you are still very close to atl. Only takes me 40 min to get to downtown. For me that's not a big deal but idk for you.
I currently live in newnan and really like the downtown of it. Crime is OK. If you are in the suburbs you will probably experience very little. Cost of living for now is cheap but home values in the area are sky rocketing.

Depends on your age, do you have a family, etc.?

Just move on up to Chattanooga. Better than all of the cities you mentioned IMO.

Can't disagree.

Athens is great if you're young with no kids, but it could work if you can afford Oconee County and commute to Athens for work and play.

Alpharetta has some pretty cool things to do. We are considering moving up that way.
Marietta is dicey, it has some nice areas, but its the ghetto of Cobb county. You are better off in Kennesaw.

THis is where we live. its fine. A lot depends on where you work. If you work in town , then any of the norther burbs suck for a commute. I work from home when not on an airplane, so it works for us.

Marietta is vastly overrated by those that live there.
Athens, like PNW said, is great if you don't have kids (either young or retired) or have plenty of money to spend on a house in Oconee County
Alpharetta has great schools, low crime, but is getting more expensive and more crowded every year.
Downtown Norcross is pleasant but everything else about that area sucks (similar to Marietta).

Athens vs. ATL? Hah, there's no decision. And Oconee County schools just south of Athens Clarke County are exceptional.

They are (I believe North Oconee HS was the top rated public HS in the state behind the magnet schools) but you typically have to pay out the nose for a house in the area to be able to attend them. Could just live closer to town and send your kids to private for the money

I would put Kennesaw, Acworth, Buford or Roswell above either of those.
Alpharetta Would be next in line.
Athens, Marietta then Norcross in the rear, unless, as someone said you can afford to buy a house in Oconee County rather than Athens.
Athens schools are terrible. Marietta schools are very hit or miss. Kennesaw and Acworth have good schools, for the most part, and very very low crime rates. Plenty of jobs as well, but you're going to pay a big more in the northern suburbs than the rest of your list.

Woodstock is pretty awesome as well from the little bit i have seen of it. It's pretty hard to go wrong north of the city.
We live in Kennesaw now. We might move up further like Woodstock, canton, jasper area

Yeah, Woodstock slipped my mind. We were looking at it, but it's just a little far out for me though. Before I moved away a few years ago I had only ever lived intown. We have a toddler now though and have to think about schools so intown isn't really an option.

in this order. If Athens was closer to Atlanta, it would move up quite a bit
