You fish for a living. You are winning at life and would be incapable of understanding a video game catching fake electronic animals.

I'm in my late 20s like a lot of these folks too and I don't get it, at all.
I never played Pokemon growing up, though. I was more into collecting sports cards and WWF figurines.

https://www.secrant.com/rant/gamecock-sports/went-to-riverbanks-zoo-today--this-new-pokemon-go-game-is-going-to-kill-someone/64190125/
I noticed it this weekend. I went to a zoo and saw a bunch of adults running around looking at their phones, but it turns out they were playing a newly launched Pokemon Go game by Nintendo.
Nintendo's stock has fricking took off like a rocket. They made $7.5BIllion in less than a week and their stock went up almost 50% as of today.
Well that peaked my interest. So we had a discussion on our board. Basically people download this game, then run around with their pokemon app running (or they can get alerts) when there is a gps geo tagged pokemon near their location. Then they try to get close enough get it. Then the battle people around them who also have pokemon, they can form teams, train their pokemon to be better, etc....
Nintendo is fricking brilliant. They found a way to get gamers outside. They also found a way to take a 20+ year old product and change the medium so that anyone can play and anywhere. They built on a huge international fanbase of people who played that game with cards when they were kids to now being able to play it on their smartphones.
It was a brilliant business move for them and now they made billions of yen/dollars.

But what happened the last week or so that blew it up? Did they have a tv show or new game?

They released a new game. If you see a dork wandering around seemingly aimlessly while staring at his phone, that's what he's playing.

It's a shitty freeware game with a Pokemon theme

Saw two this morning. As is the custom these days, they were walking on the wrong side of the road.

That is brilliant. I've seen many kids on the streets and in the parks, a lot of whom are fat, chasing the game's animals.
Hopefully, this will be a precedent-setter for more games that get people outside.

Pokemon honestly never "went away", but it reached its fever pitch in the late '90s/early '00s (I think it was brought stateside in '98). They've periodically released new Pokemon/Pokemon cards and video games, but most of us have aged out of it and haven't noticed.
Pokemon GO is kind of revolutionary. It's made a video game into something you have to actually walk around and make trips for in order to get the reward. The reward is also bolstered when you go and meet actual people for battles and to form teams. It's like someone mixed geocaching and fantasy football.

As near as I can tell, it's a nerdy, electronic version of geo-caching (sorta).

Pokemon go has more daily users in a week than Twitter has after 10 years.

It's made a video game into a face to face social experience. So yeah I agree with you.

Thanks for all the explanations

I guess it's about time Nintendo come up with something innovative.
They've sucked since the N 64 and mariokart
Not a Pokemon fan though I never got into it

The NES and SNES were the best consoles on the market at the time, and their handhelds have always been the best handhelds (although there has been admittedly little competition).
The N64's problem is all of the first-party titles (Mario and related games, Zelda, Metroid) were really good, but all of the good third-party developers went to Sony and the PSX because of the increased space and graphical capabilities of the CD rather than a cartridge. For whatever reason, they never really recovered. The GameCube wasn't bad, but it was weaker than the Xbox and PS2. They found their niche with the Wii being a casual party system, but it's kind of sad to see Nintendo make their bank on a gimmick when they used to be top dog and could simply out-muscle the competition.
That's why you never show blind product loyalty. The company doesn't care about you, and only cares about integrity of the product when you stop buying the shitty products.

New game that just came out that forces you to outside and interact with people while catching and fighting Pokemon. Right now virtually all the kids and Millennials are playing the shite out of it. It's giving my generation a full on nostalgia boner
