Nasa has unveiled the first colour pictures of the haze that surrounds Pluto, along with pictures of patches of water ice on the dwarf planet.

The reveal drew early attention this week as the leader of the New Horizons mission said there would be an “amazing” announcement. Alan Stern described the planet as “alive” — prompting many to hope for a big announcement today.

The colour pictures show for the first time that the hazes are a bright blue.

Pluto’s haze layer shows its blue color in this picture taken by the New Horizons Ralph/Multispectral Visible Imaging Camera (MVIC). The high-altitude haze is thought to be similar in nature to that seen at Saturn’s moon Titan. This image was generated by software that combines information from blue, red and near-infrared images to replicate the color a human eye would perceive as closely as possible

Nasa also said that it had found small, exposed regions of ice on the dwarf planet. Those bits of ice correlate with previously seen red patches on the surface — and scientists aren’t sure why.

water ice
In Philly, they pronounce it "wooder ice". It's not bad.

It shows that it has an atmosphere.

Who the hell is Alan Stern and why doesn't he know Pluto is not a planet?

Isn't it considered a dwarf planet?

The red areas on Pluto and Charon are apparently the result of tholins, complex organic molecules produced from the interaction of ultraviolet light and methane and ethane, blanketing parts of their surfaces. Tholins are thought to be important in the creation of life.

Perhaps they want to clarify that it is frozen H2O for people who are capable of distinguishing chemical compounds, which you apparently are not.

Tholins are common throughout our solar system. Titan, for example, is coated with them even though it's one of the coldest moons. It isn't all that surprising that they're showing up on Pluto since the dwarf planet has an atmosphere. Further spectroscopic analysis will probably show that Pluto has nitrogen and tholins in its atmosphere.

Tholins were first produced in the laboratory in the 1950s, IIRC, and are important in attempts to produce manmade life. We know every ingredient that makes up life but the recipe escapes us at this time.

I've given your mom the recipe countless times.

Sorry, I didn't want to do that in this thread, but just couldn't help it.

It can have naked chicks, free beer and 24 hour college football and still no one can live there.

Necrophilia is a type of sexual orientation. I don't judge.
