How do you find the time to work out? I am married with 2 kids(13 and 9) and struggle making time for it. I generally hate working out though, and really only enjoy swimming laps and yoga. I've had a few different periods where I was diligent on getting up at 4:30 and getting to the pool to swim laps 3 or 4 mornings a week, but I was exhausted from lack of sleep. It also made the wife solely responsible for getting the kids up, fed, and dressed for school. There's a yoga place near my office I used to hit 2 or 3 nights a week after work, but that put me getting home around 7 and leaving all the parental responsibilities to my wife. Weekends are filled with kids' activities most of the year, though I could usually steal a few hours here and there.

I don't work a job with the flexibility to slip out early a couple of days a week, nor come in late. I just feel my time is already stretched so thin, but I see so many of my friends that seem to have all the time in the world to go work out. Couple of them do work from home, and a few more own their own business, both of which provide more flexibility.

So how do you do it? Suck it up and go early in the mornings and deal with exhaustion? I think the pool at my gym is open until 8 or 9, so theoretically I could go after getting home from work and helping with homework, supper, etc. I'm stubborn with my sleep. My body just can't adjust to less than 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

Family membership to the local community center. It has several pools and a full workout center in addition to classes for yoga and body shaping. Wife and I go and take the kids. They swim or play basketball while we work out. It's a good system

Yeah, that's not a bad idea. I've taken my daughter to the pool with me to let her swim while I'm swimming laps, but she got bored pretty quickly swimming by herself. The basketball court there is always being used by youth teams for practice and games though, so not sure my son would be able to shoot hoops while I swam.

I'll check into those options.

My wife is transitioning to work from home this school year, and will be home when the kids get off the bus so theoretically they'll be done with homework by the time I get home so that could free up some time in the afternoons.

I work out 6 days a week. I get up at 5 AM every day. Me and my wife exercise together. We walk 4 miles a day. We lift weights 3 days per week. It keeps our relationship healthy

I don't have kids, but I am married, have a Ft job and in grad school. Working out has to be more than just a commitment, you have to make it part of your lifestyle. It's not easy getting up at 4:30 in the morning, but afterwards you feel amazing.

You don't have to sacrifice sleep either. Get in bed earlier.

Also meal prep is huge. Working out is more than just in the gym. I take an hour or 2 on Sunday and make all of my lunches for the week, and do protein shakes for breakfast.

You can do it, just make it a priority.

Do you mind sharing your menu and the process of the prep?

I know you can find them all over the net, but everyone has their own individual tweaks so let's hear it.

I'm married with a 16 month old.

We've got 3 separate gyms for employees at my company that we are blessed to be able to use at our leisure.

I usually eat lunch at my desk and then clock out a little bit after that and spend my lunch break at the gym.

I don't have kids but me and the gf enjoy going to the gym. We got lucky and found a awesome 24/7 gym that has an indoor pool. I see alot of people bringing their kids with them to the gym.

Myself I prefer getting up at like 3:30 or so and heading to the gym

Yeah I normally keep my really simple. The fancier you get the longer it takes, and tends to go bad faster.

I use about 4lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts, and I grill them with olive oil, a little bit of Worcestershire, and then some salt free garlic and herb seasoning and crushed red pepper flakes.

I do a box of brown rice, and boil it on the stove. Add in a little bit of hot sauce, cheese , cayenne pepper(I like spicy food a lot, lol) garlic powder and olive oil.

I sautée preen peppers in fresh garlic, olive oil, basil and tyhme.

I then dice the chicken and peppers small, and combine them all in the pot to bring all the flavored together. Then just divide them out into 7 Tupperware containers. I usually add in sides that are usually some kind of nuts, typically peanuts or almonds, and then 1-2 fruits, grapes, oranges or apples.

It takes a solid hour or more, but it's so worth it to have it for the whole week. Making meals each day becomes such a drag, and when you don't plan is when you go for convenience over health.

my issue with prepping 7 days out is the food ends up not tasting as well by day 7 to me. However, it is a bitch to try and prep a meal every single day.

we are starting to prep for monday-thursday and then prepping again for the weekend.

Yeah the longer it stays can definitely cause a problem.

I have found with the above recipe, that if I east the first one that day, then it only sits 6 days before I eat the last one the following Saturday. That one still tends to be pretty fresh.

That 6th meal is the longest I have ever stretched it out though. And that's mainly because the chicken, and rice are overall some of the longest lasting cooked foods.

I also get tired of eating the same thing over and over. When we do prep I generally try to do a grilled chicken salad of some type for one meal and then steak or pork for dinner.

the pool thing may be tough for you just due to hours, but i find that i feel great after early morning gym times and never exhausted. i get back in time for me to see kids before work (i work from home mind you, so that's a little more flexibility than most)

i'm usually in the gym 6 times a week.

See, I feel I tried that. I did the 4:30 swimming thing for a solid 2 months and my body just never adjusted to the loss of sleep. I did feel great the days I swam up until about 6PM when I got desperate for a place to lie down. It was like my body crashed and was telling me it was time for bed. And it impacted my family relationships as I'm a very grumpy person when I'm tired. Like I said, my body just can't seem to adjust to less than 7 hours, minimum, of sleep.

Hard to do with 2 kids in baseball, dance, piano, homework, eating supper together, etc. That's the main issue I run into. I run out of time with everything else going on.

Eating isn't a problem. Because of other health issues, I eat fairly healthy already. Bring my lunch everyday, cook a couple of meals for the week on Sunday afternoons, etc. My only diet concern is I drink too much beer. But I enjoy it so not going to change that.

I know I can, and that's what I'm trying to do. I just look at my schedule and it's hard to find the adequate balance. So just looking to see how other people in similar circumstances make it work.

I have a wife and two kids. For me, I steal 45 minutes or so a couple of days a week to go on a bike ride right after work. I also workout early on Saturday before everyone is done relaxing at home. I kind of gave up on the kinds of exercise that requires me to go somewhere else and come back. I just don't want to add and hour to my time to exercise just for travel. I ride my bike around the neighborhoods, jog, play sports with my son. I am not trying to pretend to be a professional athlete like a lot of people nowadays when they work out. I am trying to stay healthy

Yeah I don't mind eating the same thing for lunch every day. The. I just vary it at night with different meats and meals. For me now it's odd not to eat the same thing every day.

Maybe so, but I feel like it's definitely possible to get in the bed around 9:30. That's 7 hours. But if it's not for you, then switching to a late night workout could be the answer. Also having a home gym can help out greatly.

That's actually a great idea. I used to love mountain biking, and riding a bike in general. May look into getting a decent bike and start just riding around the neighborhood. Kids would actually probably like joining along some days.

The extent of my exercise right now is taking the dog for a 30-45 minute walk 4 or 5 days a week. When it's nice out, I'll extend that to an hour or so. It hasn't been nice enough for that here in several months though.

I get up early and do my cross fit. The wife usually plans a paleo meal for me to take to work. I work out 3 days a week and once on the weekend. On my non-work out days I ride a stationary bike while I watch tv in the afternoon.

It's hard work to keep it up...but you can do it man.

Also, I'm kidding. I eat a shitty diet and never work out. I run my own business, work at least 70 hours a week and ain't no body got time for all that. I'm shooting for an early death at 60. If I'm lucky maybe I'll die around 50.
