OT Mechanics: Car engine won't die even with key removed....

I had to disconnect the battery to kill it. Every time I reconnect the battery there is a spinning/grinding sound coming from beside the engine. I disconnect it again and it starts smoking from the area (see pic below). I drive a 2000 Toyota Camry and admit to knowing little about cars. So aside from the obvious, being my car has the AIDS.....what could be wrong.

No clue just by looking at the picture, but if the car starts back up and starts making a grinding sound once it starts it's probably a starter.

sounds like ignition switch. replace it with OEM or aftermarket (cheaper) ignition switch.

I have it disconnected now, but if I reconnect the battery cable, it starts grinding again

I'm guessing it's whatever controls the power to the starter that's causing the problem more than the starter itself. Like cromp said, probably a switch.
If you're not able to source the problem yourself in the garage, take it to the parts store and tell them you want to replace the thing that's having the issue. More than likely you'll get some young full of piss and vinegar employee that will tell you the real problem.
