Everyone from my generation wants to talk about how Nirvana killed hair bands.

I disagree, Guns n Roses killed hair bands.

They were the last of the truly rock n roll bands.

Badass gonna badass.

Discuss.

Guns N Roses killed themselves because of axle. There wasn't anyone left to hand the torch to when they fell apart. It was tragic.

Yep, it was a sad way to end things.

Axle went crazy in STL, and he was never the same. However, the run they had was epic, and you just don't see it anymore.

They killed everything. They were the last of the outliers. Les Paul guitars, Jack Daniels, and hot bitches.

God bless rock n roll.

I that's actually a pretty common opinion. Not to burst your bubble, but it comes up fairly often in conversation that Appetite just blew all the other hair bands off the radar and couldn't be topped.

I never understood the attraction to Nirvana. As far as I was concerned their music sucked. never a fan.

Appetite was great but then Guns N Roses came out with that double cd and that just killed everything. The grunge movement start and there wasn't anyone around to stop it. It was just horrible.

Nirvana made music that had been brewing in isolation in the PNW popular. "Hair band" music was the rock equivalent to modern Nashville music in that it was formula driven party music and lacked soul.

Grunge was a breath of fresh air when it came on the scene. Like every genre, it too ran out of originality.

Two bands that would've been awesome without a disgrace for a singer.

Another overlooked fact is how much they were responsible for helping push tattoos into the mainstream. If you go back and look at a lot of pictures of bands before them you will notice how few if any of them have tats.. I read an interview with Zakk Wylde a few weeks ago in which he talks about how when Guns hit the scene all of his band buddies rushed to get tats.

I think Appetitite had a bigger role than most give it credit for. I'd also argue that The Black Album had a hand in it as well. The Black Album opened the door for "real metal" bands to get some mainstream exposure, eating up another piece of that hair metal pie.

They both did. In fairness, remember the Welcome to the Jungle video? There was enough Aquanet in there to make Poison envious.

So they conformed briefly to the scene--but their music was just much, much better.

Appetite stands on its own today--very, very little else from that time still does. Slash is legit--there's more emotion in his guitar work than just about anyone I can think of.

Having said that, Nirvana did kind of slam the door shut. I remember thinking "WTF IS THIS" when Teen Spirit came on for the first time--and I liked it.

You gotta remember that Guns was still going--getting all pretentious with their double albums and orchestrations when Nirvana came on the scene. So Guns may have killed hair bands--but Nirvana finished them off (including GNR).

I never liked Nirvana, but I also have very questionable taste in music.
