Been away for approximately 8 years now since high school graduation.

My parents still live in the Helena area which I have grown to like now that I have been away so long.

I am looking at areas with a lower cost of living. Most of my search has led me to the Pelham, Helena, and Alabaster areas. Have things been in an upward climb in the last few years? I never spent much time east or north of Birmingham; how are those towns?

TIA fellas.

UPDATE: have it narrowed to the Ross bridge, lakeshore, or Cahaba heights areas. See page 5

Boring, crowded suburbs. Not much character to any of them. But if affordable housing is what you seek, that is what you'll find. Though housing all over town is pretty affordable.

I'm fed up with giving my money to the state of Louisiana.

schools suck, infrastructure sucks, traffic sucks, taxes suck, government sucks, etc etc.. I could go on and on.

I guess the only thing that kept me here so long was LSU and the saints. I can get through life just fine without them.

if your parents still live in Helena - mine do as well, then you should know it absolutely blows. stay hoover or north, esp. if you have kids. look into crestline/crestwood area and also parts of bluff park are highly affordable and closer to civilization without a damn railroad track in your way

Though the suburban Birmingham schools are pretty good.

This is where I live and the number of 25-35 y.o.s living here makes it nice. I am hoping that Mountain Brook annexes my street soon.

If schools are a factor I would stick to the Hoover area. You can get better schools but you definitely pay for it. Avondale/Crestline are growing but there are still parts you don't want to live in and the schools are no better than in LA.

Has Mt Brook even annexed an area into their enclave?

That'll never happen. Mnt Brook can't annex much more residential because if they do, they'll be forced into bussing in students. No way they are gonna have a bunch of black kids bussed in. We fought this when they annexed down Overton Rd.

Helena and Alabaster are kind of stale country suburbs to me. If you're working downtown, a loft downtown would be cool. Crestwood, Avondale, and Crestline Park are areas close to downtown, but have affordable houses. Cahaba Heights and Bluff Park are convenient to downtown and have better schools. Cahaba Heights has more places to drink and eat than Bluff Park.

There's been growth, but mostly concentrated in the Avondale/Highlands areas.

Out of the places you listed, Helena would be my choice in terms of economic opportunity and exponential recent growth.

Pelham isn't bad either, and you can get to highway 280 and 65 easily. I currently live on Valleydale in Inverness and wouldn't mind Pelham.

There are 9 house on my street that aren't in mountain brook, the other 80 are. But yes they will not do anything that requires them to bus a single kid in.

Tell me more about the crestline/crestwood area, I'm listening..

I never much ventured north of Hoover when I lived in Helena. I have no clue what's there excluding Mountain Brook, which I no can do.

Go to Saw's in Crestwood and try to find a house or apt close to there. It's the area all the Mnt Brook kids move into so they can wait for their parents to either die or let them into the family business.

Jamal,

We begged the Mnt Brook city mgr to annex my little Cahaba Heights house back when they annexed the commercial properties down Overton Rd. They wanted the sales tax revenue, but not the houses. They annexed just enough to get the strip center, gas station, and Publix. They annexed the house right beside us, but not ours. We still made bank when Vestavia annexed us.

its basically right in between birmingham city limits and mt brook. it has a good vibe to it with the younger adult crowd plus you're close to anything downtown. basically its mt brook without the taxes and birmingham without the crime problem.

So, everywhere in alabama outside of like 4 cities should suit you fine.

But seriously (or, I guess, less smartass-ly) alabaster is a very up and coming town. It's not birmingham but there's some stuff to do and very affordable. If you wanna really go dirt cheap you could look at montevallo or something like that that's close to stuff but has lower costs.

Oh so it's the area around saws? That place had some awesome food when I was in town last month. My dad took my there.

When I say lower cost of living I mean I don't want to pay $1600 rent/month for a 2 bed 2 bath and 1200 sqft living in a cookie cutter home like we have here in Baton rouge.

In Helena Pelham alabaster I've found 1200/month for better homes.

It will be me and the girlfriend she's in her early thirties and I'm mid twenties.
