There is almost always a stand still each way, worse traveling west into the tunnel.

No way they can expand it.

First off, why is there a tunnel instead of a bridge and how do you fix the situation? There is no expanding the tunnel. Right?

I imagine tall suspension bridges are expensive af, drawbridges are hella impractical on a major interstate, and ships pass over tunnels really easily.

Absolutely clueless here.

They're going to build a bridge down I-10 across the bay, and not use the tunnel. They might be removing it altogether. It's definitely not unfixable. There's already a project website up. It'll take a couple years of planning and design before any ground is broke.

Eta: it's technically still under proposal. But there's a large enough chunk of the population is Baldwin County, that it'll probably be approved.

The bay isn't deep enough to require long spans. I bet they use concrete piles, except for at the shipping channel. That may be a cable-stayed bridge.

Very similar looking cable bridge in Baytown, TX. Probably common elsewhere. Pretty concept though.

It's become a very common design. It's much cheaper than older bridge methods for longer spans. Plus, they look pretty cool too.

It's going to happen and probably get moving relatively quickly now. Trump wants to improve/upgrade the infrastructure of the country as a job creation program and AL Senator Sessions was the first senator to support Trump. Getting the funds won't be a problem, but the construction will probably take a decade.

I heard it's going to be a billion dollar bridge with a 3-5 dollar toll.

There's plans to fix some of the areas around the tunnel to hopefully help it out some.

The are also working on plans for a new bridge.

I'd be shocked if it was a toll bridge.

I'm gonna miss going through the tunnel and gunning the pipes on my truck to hear them echo off the walls

Pretty sure that's the proposed bridge.

It could be a billion dollar project. The Huey P widening in Elmwood was over a billion. But there's no way in hell I-10 toll bridge. It's federal interstate. Whoever told you that is a fool.

I used to hold my breath through it as a kid. Now, I try to hold a hit in through it.
