This has an enormous amount of applications:
EDIT:
Hydrogen Fuel cells run on hydrogen, which is highly flammable. Without an easy way to make hydrogen, you have to have a huge tank and logistical system to provide it. Tanks of hydrogen are basically bombs. With this, all you need is a tank of water. Presto, instant fuel, none of the nasty 'blow you up if you hit it wrong'.
This makes fuel cells much more economically viable. The only emission of a fuel cell is water vapor. Up until this point, one of the main problems with a FC car is the tank of hydrogen you'd have to carry around. Now, you could fill it up with your garden hose.
That's just one of them. But basically it makes fuel cells a real possibility for the future.

The nickel/nickel-oxide catalyst significantly lowers the voltage required to split water, which could eventually save hydrogen producers billions of dollars in electricity costs, according to Gong. His next goal is to improve the durability of the device.
"The electrodes are fairly stable, but they do slowly decay over time," he said. "The current device would probably run for days, but weeks or months would be preferable. That goal is achievable based on my most recent results"
The researchers also plan to develop a water splitter than runs on electricity produced by solar energy.
"Hydrogen is an ideal fuel for powering vehicles, buildings and storing renewable energy on the grid," said Dai. "We're very glad that we were able to make a catalyst that's very active and low cost. This shows that through nanoscale engineering of materials we can really make a difference in how we make fuels and consume energy."
quote:
The discovery was made by Stanford graduate student Ming Gong, co-lead author of the study. "Ming discovered a nickel-metal/nickel-oxide structure that turns out to be more active than pure nickel metal or pure nickel oxide alone," Dai said. "This novel structure favors hydrogen electrocatalysis, but we still don't fully understand the science behind it."

Fixed it. I forget sometimes the kind of neanderthals that reside here.

cell phone batteries
hearing aids
wearable technology
military technology
electric cars
hybrid cars
solar energy
drones
pretty much anything that could benefit from a smaller, cheaper, longer-lasting battery

Wrong invention. Ming Gong would not be pleased. This is a separate invention of his.

this guy and his research just became public enemy #1 for all those multibillion dollar oil and gas companies
good luck with that

You know all dem sloots in Palo Alto are out banging wannabe rappers and ice dealers. This motherfricker is revolutionizing the world economy and probably never gets laid.

Just found his list of publications.
LINK
Ming Gong may be the One who will bring about the Kingdom of Magma.
Or at least a future paid intern at Google.

Wow I looked at your link. Dont even understand the titles. Much less the actual research.
Ming Gongs doodoo is smarter then I am.
I sad now

For real, though, this is insanely cool.
Well, what I could understand of it, anyways
This is how I felt reading that list of publications:

No doubt that the powers that be are working tirelessly to put a lid on this research.

It looks like he is studying Graphene. Perhaps he is going to invent something else?
Here's some layman's info on what graphene actually does/is. Exciting stuff. Basically it may be the strongest material ever created, we just don't really understand how to use it.

S Korea working on making Graphene by 2017. Ming Gong will probably beat Korea.

Yeah, I was just thinking that very same thing. Big Oil and/or OPEC is going to see that this kid is involved in a fatal accident.

Ming Dong is one smart man, I hope he becomes immensely wealthy. He's on a tear right now.
I can't wait until he invents time travel or faster than light travel.
