All ice n water dispenser models (except 1 ge base model sxs) have built in water filter... because that's what the overwhelming number of refrigerator buyers want.. there is only one or two side-by-side models even built that do not have an external ice water dispenser and they cost more than the ice and water dispenser model simply because of the limited production... the water dispenser will work with filter removed..

quote:Yeah, while the majority of the side by side french door models have them the point remains no one says they have to buy one. Get a freezer top model if it's that big an issue. Or like we both said, don't change the filter or leave it our entirely and just enjoy u filtered water. Some of the folks in this thread are making it out to be some major issue or conspiracy. It's filtered water. If you want it to taste best change out your filter. If you don't care about it, then don't. It's not rocket science. Clogged lines are typically a result of hard water in areas. Those clogs typically are in the line before the filter anyway meaning the filtration doesn't affect whether it clogs or not.

Checked the water line underneath and had water coming out after I disconnected it. So I figured it was frozen. I used a heat gun and heated the line and around the dispenser inside and out. It's working great now, but how can I keep it from freezing again?

Replace it when the flow goes down. There will be enough calcium(I'm guessing) buildup to where this will eventually happen, but it'll take a couple years.
