So i guess i have never had a nice enough fridge before to worry about this but new LG fridge wants me to change air/water filter every six months. There's no way im gonna change them that often as the water filters can be $40+, im thinking once a year at minimum
Anyways, any SECrOTers have any personal experience with these things on how long they will filter out shite in our water? Air filter is so cheap ill just buy it however often i buy the water filter
TIA

It's a scam. If yours is like my Kenmore fridge that's about 15 years old, the water filter indicator operates on how many times the door is opened. It has nothing to do with how clogged the filter gets. My red light indicator goes off every couple of months and the water quality and quantity is unchanged. I just reset the light and press on.
As for the air filter (don't think mine has one), just pop it out and give it a cleaning once or twice a year.

This is like a 3.5 year old fridge that as far as I know none of the filters have been changed, I pulled out the air filter and I don't think I could've been able to tell the difference between it and a new one

Yep, they gots to sell those consumables for the hardline purchases. I'd buy a spare filter and change it when you notice that the water flow has decreased. That'll probably be ten years or so.
And then you'll forget where you put the spare filter.

I change mine whenever the water starts tasting metallic.
Depending on the filter it can be anywhere from 6 months to almost 2 years. The problem is that the filters change so damn much that I can never find the same filter on Amazon (or at the same price), so it's a roll of the dice each time.

I bought a new LG about 15 months ago. I ordered a new filter yesterday because I noticed the water flow had decreased.

Look on Amazon. I had to change mine when my lease was up and I believe property management said they were $40+ at Lowe's/Home Depot. I looked up the s/n on Amazon and I believe it was $17 for a generic version (same filter).

Yea I found like 6 of them for $57 total but I don't need that many no more often than it seems I'll be changing them

That's a pretty good deal. Change them every 6-12 months and worry about it again in 4-5 years.

Change when noticeable difference in water taste or water flow... a family of 8 will certainly change the filter more frequently than a family of 2..lot of variables to consider."every 6 months" is a marketing ploy.. I would also recommend using the branded filter and not the generic..

just make sure to vacuum your coils twice a year. that's about all the maintenance I do for my fridge

I've had my fridge(not even sure of brand) for 15 years and have never changed a filter on it. The water filter light has been on for at least 13 years.

Depends on how often you use it and how hard the water in your area is. Kentucky has very hard water due to the rich limestone deposits.

I change mine (LG) about every 6-8 months. Just go off the taste of the water. We drink a ton of water our of ours so it may go bad more often
I think we found a bulk pack on amazon or something but either way, about every 6-8 weeks

Wow, honestly, we bought an LG when we moved into our current home in 2009, and changed the filter in 2010 (pretty much just because), and I hadn't thought of it until I saw this thread.
So, I guess your mileage will vary, but I can't tell a difference going on 6 years with our current filter.

I ordered a box of 12 filters on eBay and changed them monthly (mostly because I had 24 of them) and the water stopped working after about a year. Five years later I still have the same refrigerator but water hasn't worked since. Still makes and dispenses ice, but no water. My dad has the same one and has never changed the filter and his water still works. What the F--k.? Sorry, got a little upset.

I buy mine from Amazon since they're much cheaper and only replace them when the water flow starts to become restricted or I notice the ice cubes aren't as large anymore. Usually takes a year plus.

Have you checked the water supply line for obstruction? Seems like it's getting to the ice maker fine. Should be a simple fix. Get in there and find wherever it T's off and see if there's a buildup of some sort.

Of course you don't taste a difference. You've become acclimated to the taste as it filters less and less over the years. Six years of the same filter means you're drinking tap water, which is totally fine. And that's really all this is about anyway. If you don't care if the water is filtered then why get a fridge that offers the option? Just drink from the tap. The air filters in tandem with some arm and hammer should keep a fridge smelling very fresh. Again, if you don't care about those things don't worry about switching and again, why would you buy one that has those features.

I don't disagree with you about tap water being fine (in most places) but a lot of times you can't buy a nice fridge without the filters
