I'm thinking about buying one of these.

Good idea? Bad idea? Please share your thoughts.

Also, what's the best way to brew the perfect cup of coffee?

I know buying fresh coffee beans and grinding them is one step. What type of beans should I be buying?

A quality coffee maker that heats in the 195 - 205 degree range.

The quality of water?

Anything I'm missing?

I agree wholeheartedly with the French Press (I have 5 total I think).

- Invest in a legit burr grinder. They are expensive but won't heat up when grinding which damages the bean's oil.
- Buy an electrical kettle that has preset temperatures. Don't go over 200 degrees because you'll run the risk of burning your grinds,
- If you want to get fancy get a frother!

Capresso (spelling?) made my burr grinder & electric kettle.

French press w/ whole beans coarse ground and filtered water or you're wasting your time.

Buy a pot
Fill pot with water
Boil water
Throw a handful of coffee grounds into water
When water boils over top of pot dump 1 cup of cold water into pot to settle grounds
Drink
You're welcome

Go to Sweet Maria's .
Their site will tell you every thing you want to know about coffee.
I buy my green beans there. My roaster and my burr grinder also came from them. They will take the time to answer your questions.
Your welcome.

It really depends what kind of water you have coming out of the tap. You don't necessarily need to filter it.

Usually drink dunkins whole beans grinded before each use. Tried this stuff and its very flavorful. Same price as dunkins for extra ounce more.

I buy coffee beans from trader joes, I grind them each morning and use distilled water in my coffee maker.

I may be in the minority on this... but coffee, and I like good flavored coffee, is a means to an end rather than the destination itself.

A $15 Mr. Coffee set for 5:30 a.m. with decent (Community, 8 O'Clock, etc.) grounds is all I need to get my eyes open in the morning and out the door to work. Everything else seems like a major waste of time.

yep. If I am scrambling in the morning I use my Keurig but if I have the time to sit down and drink it then I use one of my two french presses.
