I saw a documentary done about the Democratic Party in the south over the last 50 years, specifically in Mississippi. It's applicable to LA too. The documentary made the case that black democrats and white democrats weren't working toward the same thing, that basically black democrats were interested in helping blacks, and white democrats in helping whites. Because blacks were a more reliable voting bloc than whites, eventually white democrats would get voted out or replaced one by one with blacks, until the democrat party in Mississippi was basically the black party. There was a critical mass point, and now the state DNC is almost exclusively black, and the GOP white. The problem for the DNC then is that blacks don't have demographics on their side.

Damn, that actually sounds like it makes sense.

I don't believe it's just the blacks working for blacks and whites working for whites in the southern Democrat parties, but there's certainly a lot of truth there. What I quoted is absolutely true of the state of affairs right now.

Mary Landrieu collected something like 18% of the white vote, and likely worse if you exclude whites from Orleans parish. The racial divide by party is as stark as it has been in a long time in Louisiana.

Yeah I was simplifying the narrative, but that's the basics of it.

Democrats have been so sure that demographics were going to guarantee that they would take over the country, but it isn't true. Whites have moved steadily right the last 30 years, while Hispanics have been as well in large areas of the country. Democrats are now almost devoid of white support in a large portion of the nation, and Latinos only break 40-60 for the DNC outside of the north east and California. That break is getting smaller all the time.

One of my left wing professors has started class rants about the Koch brothers since the GOP won the house. Glad to be done with that class.

I figured as much, just wanted to note there's other stuff at play too.

I think the story is more rural whites going farther right nationally. A reaction of Christian conservative white folks reacting to the secular direction the country has been going and Democrats representing the interest of urban dwellers of all colors. The cities vs the burbs/rural is the divide I'm seeing.

Also union membership has tanked over the past thirty years or so, and that's where Democrats traditionally got chunks of the white vote. That's probably the most harmful change for Democrats winning white voters. The Democrats lack of ideas outside of "feel good" legislation for specific interests in their tent have done nothing to swing moderates back their way. They've banked on Republicans making themselves look like callous overly-religious assholes to get their votes at times, but it's not sustainable.

This is true of the Democrats miscalculation (and why immigration is being pushed so hard from the WH and the left at the moment) with Hispanics. They have varying interests outside of the immigration pandering. They're typically religiously conservative and those from Mexico aren't exactly coming from a socialist utopia. They aren't going to vote in a block for the Democrats as long as the Republicans don't alienate them with overly hostile rhetoric.

It's a good thing. Voting a block for one party isn't ever going to get you anything but empty promises. A group immigrating for jobs and education who make both parties address those needs for their votes is a healthy development for our system.

Romney won the white vote in California.

It's not a racial issue why whites are flocking right, but it's due to the Democrats moving farther left. The new progressive movement relies so heavily on lower class, uneducated folk to vote based on false propaganda and "divide and conquer" tactics.

White people are sick of the race baiting and socialist policies. They're sick of the over infatuation with gay marriage and abortion. Even though many whites are ok with both being legal we get sick of it being crammed down our throat. And the southern religious people are why Dems lost the white vote in the South. As soon as they started supporting abortion and gay marriage the south went solid red

I'm not saying both parties don't use similar tactics.

Just pointing out that progressives pander to the lower income less educated portions of minority voters by using half truths and propaganda to stir emotion and gain votes.

If you don't believe that then look at how the media covered ferguson and ran with the narrative of Brown being on his knees hands up rather than the facts produced by evidence

Progressives use emotion rather than logic and using race is the easiest and most effective tactic. But it will drive the white majority of voters away because it puts them at the negative end of that attention

Do you even chain email bro? My dad thinks Obama being from Kenya is an accepted fact and that he can make all guns illegal by executive order. I see you wrote that both parties do this kind of thing, but then what's your point?

He's always been an overweight liberal black woman wrapped in an effeminate transgender white man's body.

Wherever you saw that documentary ... don't go back there, because whoever did that documentary is a total revisionist history dumbfrick. I could shoot so many holes in the so-called documentary's theory ... but it's too ludicrous to even address - a waste of time. I'll give you two distinctly different hints ... 1 - Dixiecrats, and 2 - LBJ.
