First In Humans Clinical Trial Demonstrates Non-Invasive Expulsion of Kidney StonesLINK

Dr. Jonathan Harper said, "I am excited about presenting our findings at this year's AUA annual meeting. Not only does our ultrasound technology safely move and expel kidney stones, but also it is performed in the clinic setting without pain.

OK, I'm a bit skeptical about the "no pain" part but any step in the right direction for relief is a good thing.

The procedure is painless. The ultrasound would basically just break the stone apart so you can piss sand out instead of having the stone build pressure in your kidney.

The result won't be super comfortable and when the stone happens...you'll still know it.

No Pain solution would be great.

I lost count of how many stones I have passed years ago.

But I have only had 2 lithos and 1 basket procedure. Most of mine just require pain med, water and going to bed for awhile. Some I don't notice until they hit the bowl.

But the ones I had crushed, I wanted to cry everytime I realized it was time for me to void my bladder. I felt like I was laying slag on a highway.

That's the worst freaking part. There's nothing in this world worse than the first sharp shooting pain of a kidney stone.

Yeah...not much fun. No part of it is fun.

I remember driving my wife to the hospital one night as she went into labor with our first child...about 45 minute drive. Half way there, you guessed it...I have a stone start moving. By the time we get to the ER I am almost doubled over driving. They wheel her in and ask what is wrong with me. they wheel me in, etc. They do my scan, etc., etc. I wake up a few hours later to learn they stopped my wife's labor. She was upstairs in a room and I was down in the ER.

Wife accused me of stealing her thunder.

100% true story.

I have also been caught on the road other times...be in the middle of nowhere and you know you are just going to have to suffer for 30 minutes to an hour until you can get somewhere while trying not to wreck.

That was my Baptist pastors suggestion to me. (He is a Louisiana native)

And I am using that prescription fairly regularly.

Passing the stone didn't bother me the pain from it shifting was horrible. It was the worse pain I have ever felt in my entire life. I am not looking forward to having to experience again although I probably will have to.

except a blood clot large enough to shut down your stream entirely... and midflow. the only thing worse than pissing blood is that moment you can't. my stones were virtually painless since the stone was hung up in my kidney and never passed into the more delicate area, hence i had a lot of red urine and almost no pain. the jelly finger and 2 front side probings were the worst part of my experience by far.

I had always heard the sweet tea was a factor as well. However, the last specialist I went too did not put much stock in that...might depend on what type of stone...
But I still drink tea in moderation.

This specialist has me focusing on my oxalate intake, calcium oxalate stones. Oxalates are in plant foods and are tiny crsytaline structures plants use as a defense mechanism. I also take daily Potassium, (urocrit), which is a chalky tablet about the size of a large grape.

I hope you don't either.

So far, I have had six lithotripsies to bust them up and three basket procedures to go in and drag them out. Not fun at all.

I had one .... pissed blood for a month before I finally got the cajoles to go to the doctor. Damn near tore my kidney apart.

Couldn't pass it ... cried one night trying. Finally they decided to bust-it-up ... took some big pieces out during the surgery. I still passed little pieces for a week.

I think I cried some of those nights as well. The wife likes to claim I did .... I don't remember.
