Did the actor say he was an all-pro college basketball player?

The Addiction Center ads kills me with that one.

At least those copper ads have that gymnast, 'Sugar'. These other ads bring nothing of value.

I have done some binge easting when I hit the Indian food joints near me. Probably has to do with the background music telling me subliminally to go back for more tandoori chicken and naan.

If they made an acronym for it then its legit.

BED is real, just like my ED and my Grandma's RA and Magic's HIV.

It's legit. It's a dopamine thing. Dopamine is related to your impulse control. The evolutionary thing that makes you jump in to action. The makes you want sex when presented with the opportunity, or shove your face with food when you've gone a while without eating. But dopamine in our modern world, where scarcity of things like food and orgasm are non existent, doesn't always work ideally. Like people that get "addicted" to porn or video games. You know those weirdos that wasted their lives away playing WoW and stuff? Their dopamine levels were all sorts of fricked up. But thats not a disorder because it's missing the other part of the equation. Serotonin. Serotonin is also a mood enhancer but it's more of a constant drip thing. Low levels of serotonin make people feel depressed. So people that feel depressed often times look for excessive dopamine dumps by exposing themselves to constant stimulus because when they aren't, they aren't content. Playing video games, eating shitty food, jerking off, watching tv, smoking a little weed, drinking a bit and whatever else. These things aren't necessarily chemically addictive themselves but they all are tied to dopamine which is highly enticing. They stay up all night on this dopamine high, wake up at 3 in the afternoon. They haven't seen the sun, they haven't exercised, they haven't had B vitamins and use stimulants and caffiene.. It all begins to blunt serotonin levels. So people are groggy and grumpy and get a bigger jump with they are exposed to dopamine. So we end up with too much dopamine that robs us of seratonin we then desire more dopamine. When positive feedback loops like this reach extreme levels we see all sorts of disorders. Like there are plenty of people that drink to excess and what not. Outside of extreme cases, they aren't experiencing withdrawals. But people get depressed and use alcohol as a "coping mechanism". Alcohol becomes their overwhelming source of dopamine and when they aren't drunk their seratonin levels are non existent. Binge eating disorder is just people getting depressed and binge eating for that dopamine dump. The feel fat and get depressed and they eat a shite ton of food over like a 2 hour period. This isn't like people going to CiCi's when they are starving and they eat so much they puke. This is a methodical face shoving exercise where people are so driven by dopamine they bypass all their bodies regulatory methods for making them feel full and shite. This is isn't even that strongly correlated with obesity. Like yeah, a high percentage of people with binge eating disorder, like three fourths, are obese or overweight. But, like two thirds of people are overweight or obese. Meaning, having binge eating disorder doesn't increase your chances of being overweight or obese that much. But, about half of people with binge eating disorder have some serious form of alcoholism, which is much higher than the average.

Not saying you're not right about the "stop eating" part. This is absolutely part of the solution.

- If your body is consuming too many foods with low nutritional value and high caloric density, playing too many video games, or even jerking off too much, you're being too exposed to dopamine and you're perpetuating the issues.

- If you're not seeing the sun enough, not getting enough be vitamins, or even consuming too many stimulants by drinking coffee your seratonin levels are too low and you're only perpetuating the issues.

- There are even other neurohormones involved like endorphins and oxytocin. If you're eating too much, or even not enough spicy foods, you can also screw with things. Women that aren't orgasming enough or aren't having their tits sucked on by breast feeding babies can have that oxytocin balance out of whack as well. Middle aged women have the highest incidents of all these type of disorsers. One fourth of 40 year old women are on antidepressants in this country because their neurohormone systems are far more sensitive to all these issues.

I mean, I get the premise of the OP, and I'd even take it a step further. That people being obese and using binge eating disorder as an excuse will only make things worse. It'll enable people that don't actually have it to have a crutch and keep their own dopamine/seratonin/endorphin system at the status quo, which while not at alcholism or binge eating disorder levels, is still extremely messed up. Knowledge is power in this situation.

As a society we experience a whole host of issues. Obesity, alcoholism, ADD, depression... You name it. There isn't necessarily a "cure" for all these things, and often times our genetics play a more dominant role than someone else... but the more knowledge we have, the more likely we are to be aware of these problems and take steps to prevent the things that can lead to them and especially limit the severity of them when they do arrive. A good night's sleep, a healthy diet, exercise, seeing the sun, less porn, less video games, less TV, less stimulants, and a whole list of other things can help maintain our lives.
