I know. CSB. But I can't tell you how humbled I am with this knowledge. There names were John and Joab. Both were in the 57th Virginia Infantry Regiment which served in Brig. General Lewis Armistead's brigade. They were among the few units to reach the Federal line before the assault collapsed. Joab was wounded and later captured. John seems to have survived the battle unscathed.

That's cool to know. But why are you "humbled" by it?

Very cool. But University Greys from OM suffered 100% casualties. In picketts charge. All OM students. Thus the Rebs & whatnot. There is much history. Deepest penetration of all of Pickettts men.

Not sure about the biggest blunder, but definitely not the smartest.

My 3x great grandfather was killed at Gettysburg. Either on day 1 at McPhereson's Ridge or on day 3 during the charge. He fought for the storied 26th NC. Enlisted in June of 1861.

Genealogy is addicting once you discover little nuggets like this. I got into it 20 years ago and have documented service of 12 grandfathers in the Civil War, 6 in the War of 1812, 4 in the Seminole Wars and 16 in the Revolutionary War. One of my GFs was in Washingtons elite CIC Guard and participated in the taking of redoubt #10 at Yorktown under the command of Alexander Hamilton. One of my CW GFs was a Lt in the 2nd Charleston and was at Fort Wagner when the 54th Mass made the vanguard assault made famous in the movie Glory.after the battle, he took possession of Col. Robert Shaws( Matthew Broderick in the move) silk sash and sword. He later sent them north to Shaw's family.

Anyway, keep digging. I can assure you that you have far more "humbling" discoveries ahead of you.

There's no such thing as a smart blunder.

And I'll challenge you to name a bigger mistake made by Lee in the course of the war.

My ancestors called the war "The War Against the Rebellion." I suppose yours called it "The War for Southern Indepdendence."

Hey, what's in a name.

I love going to Gettysburg, like Arlington Cemetery it has an aura about it. You can feel the weight of the history. I respect the men who died in the face of that hell. From both sides. The will it took to force one's self to go through with warfare of that type, battle after battle, is incredible.

My 2x great grandfather was captured in Pa or Northern Va. Details are a little fuzzy. He had to walk home to Sevierville, TN after the war when he was released

I always thought it was cool that his first name was Artillery. Which is what I am going to make my son's middle name.

Going farther back, way farther back. I am related to William Wallace. He was my gajillionth great aunt's son.

The ENTIRE battle was not Lee's finest moment. It should have never been fought there to begin with, but Richard Ewell should have overrun Culp's Hill on day one, dislodging the Union Army from Cemetery Hill and changing history.

Newt Gingrich and a co author wrote an alternate history novel series on the subject which was interesting. Lee flanked the Army of the Potomac and seized their supplies at Winchester, then filed into Meade's intended line at Pipe Creek. The Union Army attacked and was routed.

Long term the North still won the war in the series, but it was a plausible what if and Longstreet wanted to talk Lee into doing something just like it.
