I'm gonna have a dilemma tomorrow that I'm not sure how to handle.

Job A called me Thursday to confirm my salary expectations at which I confirmed xx,000 to yy,000. He then said the offer letter will be drafted and sent over early this week.

The next day Job B called that afternoon and offered 2k less than xx,000 but they are a larger company and the commute is much shorter. The role itself is probably more appealing as it is more project based instead of daily routine work. Plus they want to train me to be the SME for Tableau and their databases.

I owe Job B an answer tomorrow, but I've still yet to receive Job A's offer. I've been working with the recruiter to speed it along, but she did tell me that company moves slow with the hiring portion.

How would you handle this situation?

If you have a recruiter for job B have them stall for you. It shouldn't offend the employer that you're performing multiple interviews.

At same time, let A know explicitly that you are running out of time on another offer.

If they want you, they'll speed things up or slow things down, within reason. if they're unwilling then you have to consider they'll be hard headed about a lot of things during your employment there.

ETA: One thing I've learned now that I've hired people is that it's a pain in the arse and is just extra work on top of your normal daily job to try to fill a position. You have to invest time into each candidate to vet them, and it can be difficult finding a candidate you like. Its a huge relief for them to find someone they think is up for the job.

An employee with their interest has more leverage than you might think. I guess what I'm saying is that it's not easy for a hiring manager to find the right candidate, so if you're close to an offer, recognize your own leverage in the process. Contrary to a job-seeker's belief, they don't just print "the right person" off of assembly lines.

Take Job B. But first stall them like swoopin said.

Very few times in your life do you get leverage like this, take advantage of it.

$2K isn't much less, if it's a shorter commute and more along the lines of the work you want to do.

You definitely sound like you want job B. A short commute is certainly worth the $2K less in salary. Especially since you like the company.

Well, job A must've finally got the nudge from the recruiter. They left a voicemail first thing this morning. They have a customer meeting tomorrow and wanted to make sure there were no surprises from that meeting prior to extending the offer.

Sounds like that wraps it up. Job B is the victor.

This. Over 12 months and taxes it isn't a huge difference. probably not much better than the extra gas.

Do not get screwed trying to play a game.

Is this contract or direct hire? You did not mention benefits, 401k, bonus, etc.

I work for less salary now than I could make, however it is worth it because of work environment, commute and benefits.

What is commute difference?

Based off what you provided, I would take B and be done with it.

Both are direct hire automotive logistics jobs. Neither will be bonus driven. Commute difference is huge. Job A would be similar to my current drive (1 hour). Job B is only 30 min.

I signed an offer letter with job B this afternoon.

Wait I'm confused. You were waiting on a call from job A in order to take job B?

The only reason behind that is that I interviewed with all of the executives there over the course of three in person interviews. I was much more vested in the process with job A. Job B was one interview with VP and Sr Manager with an offer coming a week after. I have been in talks with Job A for well over a month.

Shorter commute and/or less traffic is worth a lot of money to me.

Flip a coin, heads for job A and tails for job B. You'll know the answer while the coin is in the air because deep down you'll know what you want it to land on.

Well job A got back to me today. They signed their contract with the new client which means their offer is coming tomorrow morning. They did confirm the offer would only be 2k more than job B.

So, job B is the much better option for me.

Probably make up the 2K just by fuel costs and driving time.

$2K isn't much if you like the option better. That's $38 a week, bro.
