They won't let us fricking vote for what we want. For instance, the lottery/gaming bill, the Alabama Senate Committee continues to delay the bill, won't let us vote, and continues to cut into our education fund.

That's not entirely true. The lottery has been voted on many times before. And last year, the education budget (one of two in AL, the education and general budgets) ran about a $200M surplus.
I'm not really against the public voting, but neither is it fair to have votes keep coming up until you get the result you want. The lottery has been voted down on multiple occasions.

No.
If a lottery and/or gaming was an issue of importance to the majority of voters, they would elect representatives that would support it and it would pass.
In fact, last election cycle, there were several candidates that ran on a pro gambling platform and they were all universally crushed. Joe Hubbard's entire AG campaign was paid for by gambling interests to the tune of several million dollars and he lost by 20 points.

No it didn't. Reserve funds are not surpluses. The Alabama GOP lied to us, and the education in this state is going to be further damaged.

I don't think it's marginally better or worse, but we can't keep cutting spending, diverting ETF money elsewhere, while refusing to give teachers a raise and adequately equipping classrooms with needed books and supplies, and expect things to improve.

Yes on classroom, supplies. The median pay for an Elementary school teacher in Alabama is over $50K.
They got fat over the yrs with the AEA controlled D's and Paul Hubbard. Get rid of tenure and then talk about incentives and raises.

While I fully agree that these type of measures are intended to prevent certain groups of people from voting, the fact is I believe someone so dissociated from modern society that they do not or cannot obtain any official form of ID should not be voting. Such a person is almost certainly incapable of casting an informed ballot. It is almost effortless to obtain a government issued ID, essentially the biggest hurdle is usually nothing more than patience. You don't need a local DMV to get one.

For those of you FROM Alabama who actually have an interest in the education buget vs general budget topic, here is an excellent opinion from a state senator:

I may not agree with him 100%, but he makes some great points and it is well worth reading. As the child of a long time educator in Alabama, and having had a state teacher's license myself, I am of the opinion that our education issues are patently NOT money related. We spend nearly $10K per year on students at the primary education level... and the citizens are bombarded with sales tax, property, and other taxes to fund more. It's never enough. IMHO the AEA and Hubbard Dimocratic machine ran it into the ground for a LONG time and that train doesn't stop and reverse quickly.
And tying up the two subjects previously mentioned... a lottery for education purposes is foolish IMHO. Very few states maintain or sustain level funding for education based on a lottery. We need to budget and fund our education efforts appropriately with fiscal restraint... period, regardless of funding source. Lottery revenue is notoriously variable and at best, provides an unknown and uncertain income to the state that can fluctuate highly based on the economy.
I'd be all for allowing a lottery if we let a private company run it (i.e., not a state run monopoly with accompanying bureaucracy and administration) and simply taxing profits. to me, that would be a lot cleaner and more efficient. I do think here are serious issues about lotteries being a de facto disproportionate taxation upon the poor, but I also have libertarian leanings that say we ought to be able to make our own choices.

Regarding an education lottery, I can tell you what happened in North Carolina:
1) They started the lottery and said all the money would go to education.
2) It didn't take long at all before they diverted some of that money to fill budget gaps.
I have the same mixed feelings as you do about the lottery. I was for it because I wanted to play. Not long after it started, I organized a pool of six players. We each put in a dollar a week. We've been talking for 10 years about what we're going to do when we strike it rich. It makes us happy.
Having said that, we are in the minority when it comes to lottery players. I almost never meet middle-class professionals in the lottery line. Most of the people who play can't afford it.
