I don't think the decision on which offices to close was racially motivated, nor motivated to discourage anyone from voting or being able to vote, but I refuse to believe nobody involved in the decision had the foresight to see the optics of it. They deserve the backlash they've received over it.

They closed 31 offices. 23 of them were in rural majority-white counties.

How does this suppress any vote?

I said no idea to the extent. If it prevents one case of fraud, it's a good law as it protects another person's vote.

It's funny when people in the South bitch about "big government" when the southern states are the most heavily subsidized in the nation.

How much fraudulent voting do you think happens in Alabama?

The biggest problem in regards to this is the voter rolls in several areas are outdated. They don't account for people that have died, or moved away, etc. And there is no guidance from the Secretary of State's office on how to keep them up to date. But at the same time, the state coming in to clean them up is a political football, based on what happened in Florida leading up to the 2000 election.

But to answer the question, in-person voter fraud does happen, particularly in local elections, and particularly in smaller, rural areas. But the bigger issue is election fraud perpetrated by the candidates and their representatives in these areas.

A Democratic city councilman in Dothan, Alabama struck a local TV reporter twice in the face on Tuesday after being asked about allegations that he engaged in voter fraud.

According to the Dothan Eagle, WTVY reporter Ken Curtis confronted District 2 commissioner Amos Newsome over the allegations after a city council meeting and asked him if he would consider resigning

I live in one of the counties which had its dmv closed.
Here is what we lost.
The office was only open on Monday. If you needed a dl or state Id you had to go to another county any other time.A drive of 20-30 miles depending on which county seat you go to.
The dmv office was located about 2miles from the courthouse.
The state voter Id is available to anyone who is registered to vote. The office is open 5 days a week 8:00 to 4:30. The office is located in the court house.
The id is a pic Id that is free to the voter.
Each Id cost the state $8.25 . A voter can get a lost Id replaced free.

If anyone says that alabama is trying to keep people from voting I will call bs, it ain't so.

The type of voter fraud that photo IDs prevent doesn't even exist.

Yes it does. Absentee ballot fraud is much more widespread and quite honestly far more effective at swaying local elections but here in Alabama prior to the voter ID law there isn't a single statewide election that passed where some people didn't go to the polls only to discover they'd already voted.

This all Day LONG and generally speaking the black belt is the overwhelmingly the area where it happens.

You have small town municipal elections where the voter turnout rate is higher than presidential elections and a huge majority of the votes cast are absentee.

Federal spending? does that mean, like at places like TVA, Marshall Space Flight Center, U.S Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Fort Rutgers,etc... Or is all of that fed spending just welfare?

It is all spending - a fact they leave out every time they trot out those numbers.

Oh, and there's no Fort Rutgers in Alabama.
