Shutting down driver's license bureaus in rural, majority-black counties? And then claiming it's not to suppress the vote?

LINK

I lived in Tuscaloosa for two years in my 20s, but I left because I knew I couldn't raise a family there.

Looks like I made the right choice.

You can do pretty much everything online now anyway. No reason to have all those DMVs.

anyone without a driver's license can go to any county register's office and have a photo ID made and the closing of the DMV offices will not change that fact.

Rural areas have less people. Common sense or something.

Not in the top 250 of the first words that come to mind when when I think of Alabama.

Alabama has the reputation it deserves.

a decision to close 31 driver's licenses offices across the state is aimed at making it more difficult for black Alabamians to vote.

sounds like they're at least coming at it from a fair perspective in the reporting.

I would, but they cost the rest of us too much money.

For every $1 in taxes paid, Alabama receives $1.29 in return.

Complains about Alabama closing DMVs to save money. Complains about money Alabama receives. You can't have it both ways.

Pass Voter ID laws.

Restrict poor democrats from access to IDs.

You're Alabama.

You'd think in this hyper PC climate, the legislature would at least be aware that PR is a thing.

They can still get ID's at their county seats. DMV's aren't necessary to get photo ID's.

But that doesn't make for knee jerk reactions and ratings.

Of course, you could also actually research the issue instead of relying on the failure that is al.com.

If you have a DL, you can still renew it at any probate office. If you don't have a DL but instead use a Voter Id card, the state will drive it to your house. Both of these aren't new and haven't changed.

The one and only change is that you've got to travel further to take a driving test and get your license for the first time.

Since most people in Alabama get their driver's licenses at the age of 16 and 16 year olds can't vote, the number of voters actually adversely impacted is somewhere in the general vicinity of 0.

I've seen the basics of the ID law, it's hardly unreasonable.

You know how the knee jerk reaction works, walk right into it, and then complain about the knee jerk reaction. Sure the reactionaries aren't doing their homework, but it doesn't make it less foolish to fall into the trap you know is there.
