Would provide urban areas a much needed free work force to make it look nicer & make where habitual drug users could keep a job instead of having to serve time & lose employment.

I thought most nonviolent offenders already got off with mostly just a fine?

Not here. Know a few people who have had to serve weekends in county to cover a minor weed charges.

Mandatory minimums for repeat offenders is why the prison system is filled with nonviolent criminals

(Estimated Number Of People In The US Sentenced To State and Federal Prison For Marijuana Offenses)
Total Federal Prisoners 2004 = 170,535
Total State Prisoners 2004 = 1,244,311
Old numbers that I'm sure have gone up.

All prison does is make you into a much more well connected criminal. There is no rehabilitation in prison only survival in a predatory society.

You left out there part where Prisoners always find god as well though.

IF you think about it this really ties into the Baltimore riot situtation
1. you're poor, you have no money, you have no food, no one else is bringing in any money for whatever the reason may be, you do the only thing you can do or know how to do or that's available to you, sell drugs
2. you get busted selling drugs, now you're a felon and now all the education in the world wont' get you a good job becuase no one will ever touch you with your criminal record
or
1. you experiment with drugs becuase everyone else is doing it you get busted, now you're a felon
2. now you clean up, you realize that no matter how clean or how hard you try you can't get ahead because no one will hire you and you can't make a good living
3. you end up going right back on the streets doing drugs but now you really don't give a shite becuase you see there is no way out of the hole
I used to be a drug addict. I completed drug court, and I have no record becuase of it. I see too many people trying, then just give up. You can't get ahead.

Lobbyists for the prison services industry wouldn't hear of such a thing.

Because putting people in jail makes more money. Why provide your constituents with services directly when you can just get money?

The'll get released when weed becomes legal nationwide

Yup. I did 4 or 5 days in county because of less than 2 grams of weed.

Not completely true, I am a convicted felon (2 time loser) and I have a good job and make a very comfortable living, but yeah it's a bitch to get work but it can be done.

The vast majority of those numbers are repeat offenders serving their mandatory minimum sentence.
So it's not like you get caught with pot once and go to jail. If you cooperate then you're most likely just given a ticket but sometimes they will take you in for a night

If you had to WORK to repay society for misdeeds, there would be a lot more upright citizens.
It's a novel idea. But alas prison is fun for some and they get to spend time lifting weights and chilling with their friends

They removed weights from the Arkansas prison system & they still have prison jobs.

Because millions and millions of revenue would be lost.

How else could you keep a demographic on a leash?

Non-violent felons can also include burglary charges. There are a lot of repeat offenders of that. Personally, I don't want them robbing my vehicle, residence or business because the local DAs keep plea-bargaining them out of their repeat offender status and getting them released. This frees them up to commit more crimes, not seek gainful employment.
At what point does society get to be protected from the criminal and their overwhelming recidivism?
