I'm not being a smart arse, but why did you go all the way to Africa? Always wonder about this with people.

I think it is because it gets more attention for the wannabe martyrs. Missionary work is not near as fun in Chicago etc. Missionaries have been going to Africa for hundreds of years which leads me to believe they are failing horribly, since thousands continue to go on these poverty tours yearly. Much more could be said about this racket, but this is enough.

I'll take you at your word.

I can't speak for others, but I'll tell you why I go. Before I do, though, I need some clarification. In your question, do you assume:
• Africa doesn't need help.
• Africa needs help but there are enough people in Africa willing and able to do the work.
• Africa needs help, but there is plenty of equally important work to do for equally disadvantage people in the USA.
• Something else entirely.
Once I understand more where you're coming from, I'll give you my answer.

You went all the way to Africa to lie?

Hi brother, thank you for engaging with me.
My question has nothing to do with Africa. We all know Africa, like everywhere, can use help. We all love helping and being helped. My question is why go all the way to Africa?
I'm interested in your motive. Is it because you believe Africans are particularly sinful, have a greater depth of need for your work, or because you're hoping God will be particular impressed by the length of your travel itinerary?
I have now doubt, that wherever you live, there are sinful people, people hurting, lonely, need physical help, etc.
I can understand the need for applause. I'm sure your friends, cute girl, family, and church members, are impressed, and filling you with good feelings. Most on this board are doing the same. I'll applaud you as well for the distance of this feat, if it helps. Perhaps you believe God is also applauding you. Now, before you tell me you are not doing this for the applause I just wonder are you really willing to know thyself. Why are you going all the way to Africa?

Maybe that's where God told him to go? I am sure many converted Jews wondered why Paul went all over Asia-minor instead of preaching to his home folks.

Yes, perhaps this is the same as Paul. But, God wants me to specifically ask about his motive.

If Africa needs help "like everywhere," why does it matter how far he goes or doesn't go? He's meeting a need in a location.
You say your question has nothing to do with Africa, but you are taking umbrage with the distance. Kinda silly.
I'm not one to go on overseas mission trips myself, but why jump all down the throat of those who do serve in that manner? You're kvetching about applause, but really you just have an axe to grind

I would expect less have been exposed to Christianity in places like Africa compared to say, Detroit or San Antonio. And spreading the word and salvation is the primary calling for Christians. No?

I'm just happy that he is helping. It doesn't matter where he is helping.

This helps. I wish I had a longer response in me, but it's past midnight here and I'm worn out. Hopefully this will suffice.
Because a ministry our local church supports put out a call for help. We put a team together and went.
My motive was simply to step outside my comfort zone and offer help when it was asked. Africans are no more sinful than any other people. I have no illusion that God is the least bit impressed with anything I do. I seek to obey His word and respond to His calling. I often fail at both.
I'm not sure I can convince you, but I really have no need for the applause. Is it nice? From those whom I know, sure. From anonymous internet people? Ok, sure, but decidedly less so. But I don't need it.
Now to the heart of the matter. Yes, I am in Africa. More specifically, I am in Uganda. Even more specifically, I am in Gulu District in northern Uganda. When I answered the call for help put out by the ministry I'm serving with, it was with the knowledge of exactly where I would be serving. Let me highlight why that mattered.
• Almost 50% of Ugandans are 14 or under. Their median age ranks second to last among all nations on this planet. That's what several years of civil war will do to a country.
• Remember Idi Amin? This is his old stomping grounds.
• Remember Joseph Kony? He and his Lord's Resistance Army turned Gulu and other parts of northern Uganda into a hell hole.
• All of the aid that comes into Uganda goes first to the capital, Kampala. Practically none of it leaves that area. The president, Museveni, knows that if he takes care of the southern districts, he'll be re-elected (as he was last year). Much of Gulu District is without an infrastructure to provide electricity. That isn't likely to change anytime soon.
From Luke 10:
“And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?"
And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself."
And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
Why did I go? To love my neighbor as myself.
From Matthew 25:
“And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'”
These people? They are truly the least of these in a way that the poorest Americans could not even fathom.
Hope that helps explain my motive.

Some of UK's fall athletes take an annual mission trip to an African nation. I believe most recently they've been to Ethiopia. Austin MacGinnis actually worked with an agency here to get one of the kids he met fostered here in the U.S. and he was at one of the games last season. Enjoy it.

Thank you for your response. I know questions like these normally disturbed religious people who don't like to be questioned too seriously about their ideology or motives. However, you came through nicely. Travel safely and get home well.

Uganda, huh? Are you there with one of Senator Jim Inhofe's organizations?
I really hope you're providing help and aid to impoverished people. I really pray you aren't there to help make homosexuality a death penalty offense.
There's a lot of good Christians going there to help people..But unfortunately, there's also a lot going to push am evil agenda because they've lost the battle against lgbt groups in this country.

Them I'm very glad to hear you're doing the Lord's work, rather than other who go there and cause more problems for their society. It's always refreshing to see people heart filled with love, instead of hate.
And I have $50 for you if you can get me an Auburn 2013 NC shirt.
