If you could talk to the minority students at your school, what would you say?

If some of your black friends came up to you and said that they had ran into several instances of racism at your campus, what would you do/say? Now you know these students aren't lazy people or "dindunuffins". They're just regular student who go to class everyday and are working toward a degree and a career, not the SJW who are wanting retribution for slavery, or want you to check your "white privilege" (which is somewhat overblown).

And don't just say "suck it up" or "get over it", because more often than not they have or have tried. If a black person reported/ complained about every racist incident you would see or hear about a protest every month.

I'm also not talking about if some drunken frat boy called someone the n word either. Humans will continue to be stupid until the end of the world, and dumb stuff like that happens. I'm talking about when a person feels unwelcome and lothed simply because of the color of their skin.

So I ask you, people of the ot board; what would you do? How would you make the school that you love a welcoming place for everyone?

"Gig 'Em"

I'd say party with the cool kids, ignore the random racist bastards (unless they're threatening you or impeding your education in the classroom), and get that paper.

"Those people are idiots, ignore them"

And then we'd all move on with our lives. Done.

The first task in attacking problems with difficult people is discerning to what degree the problem actually affects your life and not your feelings.

Is this a person with whom you are forced to share space (live with or work alongside)? That makes for a real problem.

Is this a person who has power over your life as a teacher, administrator or boss? That's an even bigger problem.

Is this some rando on the street? frick em. (Not literally. That's frowned upon. Unless you get consent.)

The reality is that you will face people in your life who will make your life difficult for any number of reasons. It could be race, jealousy or any number of their own internal issues which become yours by extension. Learning to appropriately deal with those people is a huge part of life and a skill which will enable you to advance and succeed in the game of Life.

Side story, I remember in high school being part of a fake race war. The blacks squared off against a group of whites, then most of the whites started kicking the crap out of the ones who we all knew were racist. Nothing brings people together better than violence.

When my black co workers had stupid white people be racist towarda them, we just did our best to remind them that those idoits make up a very small % of people and the majority are good people.

MLK didn't become a great leader by having thin skin and being offended constantly. Have thick skin, ignore the small stuff and focus on battles you can win.

I would say, "How grateful are you that you are not at fricking Mizzou."

Then we would knuckle-up and look at one another with approval and racial harmony ...

Dude most of them only want blacks that play sports at their schools...a FACT.

Very true. Those regular black students take school more seriously than those young bucks and bulls they gush over on recruiting days and on saturdays.

So would you say the same to thousands of whites who call the cops because they see black kids walking down the street...or the racist ones that call black renters landlords trying to get them evicted....had all those problems.....nobody tells the racists to "have thick skin".

shite that happened to me and my family when we first moved to joplin was disgusting....landlords would tell us all these people in the neighborhood would call them trying to get us out. Sad. But blacks that get called the N word suppose to have thick skin...everybody else need to have thick skin too.

So if you experience hate all your life because of your skin color, you better expect some to get worked over when being called a N word at a university. shite takes a toll, now you are paying THOUSANDS of dollars in tuition, room and board, you don't want to put up with that shite at school. You're trying to better yourself like the other students so people won't call you "lazy", living off the govt, want handouts. Then they get mad when you try to make your life better.

I've dealt with racism in the past and have never let it get to me. Yes, its a sad situation but you can't expect for everyone to love you for who you are. Humans are instinctively wired with hate and the faster you realize that the better life you'll have. Don't let it get to you or the racists win. Unless my life is being actively threatened, I don't pay much attention to them.

I still see it this way but lately it's like all that pushing it off has built up inside me. I just feel angrier lately.

You can do what you want. If you want to stay pissed off and miserable, go for it. That's on you.

Think we could all use a reminder of that once in a while. This should be taken into consideration with all groups of people.
