I like it. Seems like we should lift all the sanctions on them and take them for their word that they won't do it anymore.

Regardless of this, giving Iran a deal where they can and will develop nukes is stupid.

Pfft. When they chant "Death to America", they mean the ideological manifestation of the evils of capitalistic greed and sexual debauchery, not an actual death.

George Bush didn't seem too concerned when North Korea withdrew from the non proliferation treaty. In fact he waited 4 months and invaded a country without an active WMD program. :golfclap:

What does George Bush have to do with anything?

North Korea

Remember that time we signed that treaty with North Korea?

Good afternoon. I am pleased that the United States and North Korea yesterday reached agreement on the text of a framework document on North Korea's nuclear program. This agreement will help to achieve a longstanding and vital American objective: an end to the threat of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula.

quote:

Under the 1994 Agreed Framework, the U.S. government agreed to facilitate the supply of two light water reactors to North Korea in exchange for North Korean disarmament

On October 9, 2006, North Korea announced it had successfully conducted its first nuclear test. An underground explosion was detected, its yield was estimated as less than a kiloton, and some radioactive output was detected

I feel safe.

I got three downvotes for this. Either people don't comprehend sardonicism, or they do and they really think Iran is deserving of this deal.

Both possibilities are troubling in their own way.

I'm actually not really that concerned.

Being the Ayatollah must be an awesome gig. He is the Supreme Leader after all. All the power and money that comes with that...why frick it up by unleashing nuclear hell fire upon your country? If Iran's moves look that those of a NK style nutjob, sure I'm much more worried. Everything the Iranians do make sense, if hostile to our interests. Persian leadership has too much to lose to actually push the death button, imho.

The deal just started a conversation with some of the moderate factions in Iran and gives us a little more access. It's not like Europe was going to keep the sanctions going, so we get a little something and hope we can build some trust.

I don't see any problem with what he said. Iran is no threat to the US either way.

What exactly did we get? We capitulated to every demand they had. And how can trust be built, when they still openly fund terrorists? Not to mention in this deal had a secret portion that only came out later that will give them the option to..inspect themselves.

An unusual secret agreement with a U.N. agency will allow Iran to use its own experts to inspect a site allegedly used to develop nuclear arms, according to a document seen by The Associated Press

We could have done nothing and get nothing. Unilateral sanctions does nothing for us. Now if Iran doesn't play ball, it'll be possible to reinstate the sanctions.

I don't think we got much, but I'll take a less than ideal start with options if the deal goes tits up.

We pretty much got nothing. Zilch. They will still fund terrorism and have a shite ton of unfrozen assets to do so now. Nothing would have been better than what we will have.

Us. We will lift your sanctions.

Them. Ok, we will inspect our nuclear weapons sites.

Us. Ok. Yall are awesome.

Them. The West must die.

Oversimplification? Yes. Accurate? Yes.

this is unfortunately the truth. i don't think Iran is nearly as terrible as Saudi Arabia, but we literally gave them everything they wanted, and their only capitulation was, "we'll inspect ourselves"

we still have prisoners there and the state department didn't even mention it in negotiations. that's a bit of a red flag to how little we asked or how little we negotiated.
