I was surprised that California was such a big meat-producing state and that Texas has so many sheep and goats. I knew that Iowa and Minnesota were big on hogs.

Regrettably, yes. In the U.S. it's used in pet food but most is exported to countries like France.

Yep, in some cultures horses, dogs and even cats are on the menu.

My brother spent a summer in Grenoble, France at the university while in high school. He told me the first night the group went to the dining hall for dinner the meat served was horse tongue.

He said the food was so bad that after several weeks they were getting excited because horse tongue was being served.

Ain't so bad. If you gotta put a horse down, I'd rather that you use the meat than toss it.

Dogs and cats are super unclean, though, with tons of parasites. You'd be stupid to eat them.

I'm sure that's the general opinion outside those areas of the country where horses are revered. I haven't ever met a Kentuckian, for example, who thinks horses are not on the same level as dogs and cats as beloved members of the family. When they die they're usually buried on site using a backhoe.

Surprised by the beef production in Florida. Shows how little I know about Florida.

Taziki's gets their supply from there.

I have never been to Iowa. Does it smell as bad as it looks like it should?

Interesting that a state with Hogs as the state animal produces so few hogs.

Well, Iowa isn't known for its tourist attractions. The hog farms are probably the reason. They smell awful.

I have a late brother in law who owned a stockyard in Alabama and had some damn fine beef and pork go through there.

Grownin up, we'd take our bulls and hogs to Oneonta for butchering. You've never had good meat until you've raised it on your own without the crap injected in them to make them grow. Grass, corn and 100% natural feeding gives them an entirely different taste than what you buy at the store.
