Not upscale but the eggs benedict at Moose Mcgillycuddys in Waikiki is surprisingly good. It was near our hotel and tried it one morning and went back 3 mornings in a row.


Also, Helena's Diner was some good local stuff.

A lot of people who haven't been to Hawaii for some reason believe luau's are a waste of time...something that only the most stereotypical tourist want to do.

They are wrong.

The Old Lahaina Luau is a great time! The sandpit barbeque pig is incredible and their Mai Tais are excellent. You'll walk out of the Luau as drunk as you've ever been. Highly recommend the Old Lahaina Luau.

Also, a local secret (something you'll find in the Blue Book) is that the best entertainer on the island is in fact a magician. I was skeptical about attending a magic show while in Maui. I thought to myself, "Perhaps the locals are fricking with me. Why would I want to waste a night in Maui at a magic show?" But the locals kept recommending it, so we went.

Best decision we made!

The club is called Warren and Annabelle's and it sells out every night. It's also voted "Favorite activity/show on Maui" by Hawaii Magazine.

The magic show is a hip speakeasy type bar and dinner show in Lahaina that involves solving a room sized riddle to access a secret bar behind hidden walls. Once you're in the bar the magic begins...and it's top notch magic! But it doesn't end there. You're constantly moved around to other secret rooms where you eventually end up at the main performer's stage. This is a 4 hour show, so book it early and plan on this being your entertainment for one evening.

I've never been but I suggest you ignore Mizzoukillz' suggestions.

Try the poi at Mukalakahiki's. And a trip to Maui isn't complete without getting a mango daiquiri at Lalahamanamana's.

We went in the summer and spent a week. Although we ate at a lot of the restaurants on the south (resort) side of the island and they were fine, the best meal we had was at Mama's Fish House on the north side of the island off of the Hana Highway.

Highly recommend that place, it's flat-out amazing.

I went this summer. My recs:

First day - you will wake up crazy early due to jet lag so drive up to the top of that volcano and watch the sunrise (it's a popular tourist activity). It's pretty neat. Bring something warm as it can get cold up there.

Old Lahaina Luau - I didn't do it, but heard nothing but great things. If you're going to do a Luau, do this one as the others are considered poor substitutes. And book reservations soon because it sells out.

Road to Hanna - Ok, have a love/hate relationship with this. It's on most to-do lists, but keep in mind this is a tiring all day ordeal. The drive is brutal, windy roads with lots of bad drivers. Make sure you get a good rental car and have a plan set in stone with good research in advance and your stops well planned out with a navigator. There are lots of cool things to see along the way and some are easy to miss. Leave early and bring supplies and bring along an old pair of shoes for hiking/swimming that you can trash when the trip is over.

Snorkling is good there. There's a big reef that a lot of people take guided tours to offshore but I found there are some good reef spots on shore that you can go to with tropical fish, turtles, etc. Just spend $10 to rent some gear and research the noted spots.

Helicopter rides. I did this just because I had never done it before. It's expensive - and probably not worth the money if you're on a tight budget - but it's a fun, quick way to explore parts of the island you either can't access or don't have the time to see.

Eating - Mama's Fish house is the go-to place for fresh caught seafood. If it's too crowded or expensive, the nearby Paia Fish Market is good too, and much cheaper and laid back. Cool Cat Cafe is the place to go for a burger. It's in downtown Lahaina where there are lots of cool restaurants, bars and shops. All the resorts have pretty good restaurants.

Mamas Fish House is a given. I typically stay in Wailea, so I know that area better. If you are in Lahaina or past that, I can't really help.

In Wailea, there's Monkey Pod which is pretty cool and they have Lilikoi Mai Tais if you are into that. Also, if you like sushi, Koiso in Kihei is a tiny 15-20 seat restaurant run by an old Japanese guy. You need a reservation and you simply tell him to serve you whatever he thinks is best - if you are adventurous, it's amazing. If you want a more party sushi environment, Sensei is Kihei can be pretty good as well.

A great view with decent food is the Humuhumu... At the Grand Wailea. There are multiple restaurants there and at the Fairmont and Four Seasons that are great.

In Kihei, there are a bunch of hole in the wall places that are pretty cool.
