Yes, cold turkey after smoking for 10 years. Quit drinking at the same time as well as that was my trigger to light up. First week was hell, but it got easier after that. Hardly even think about it now 6 years later.

Yes. Dip.

Sunflower seeds and chewing gum. I did it for Lent, so I had some Baby Jesus on my side, which helped.

ETA: Last dip was on Fat Tuesday, 2014-so it was cold turkey.

Just quit. You can't try gradually easing out of it. Just have to quit and stick with it.

Quit on Friday the 13th. Oddly enough, my father told me he also quit on Friday the 13th.

I quit smoking by chewing tobacco. I hated chewing and was able to gradually get off it.

Weened myself off cigs. Took about a year. The key for me at least was realizing that you are going to breakdown and smoke again, but to try fall back to a pack a day. If you went 2 days without a smoke and broke down, try and go at least 3 days before you have the next one. Eventually I didnt need them when I was sober. When your drunk is tougher, but if you never buy cigs and always bum off your friends when drinking, eventually they get tired of giving you smokes so you stop asking.

I've never smoked personally but my Mom quit for a few years using Chantix. She never finished the whole prescription though because it gave her some fricked up nightmares. She picked back up after a really stressful time in her life.

I quit dipping pretty much every year. I dip in the summertime when I'm working in the yard and spending a lot of time on the lake and outside (as well as not spending 8 hours a day at a job where I can't dip). When school starts back up, I quit.

I do occasionally dip when I'm on a fishing trip or a weekend of camping. The trick, for me, is to toss the can when the week starts back up. If I keep the can through the week, it can lead to me starting again.

Also: if you're a smoker, look into vaping and weaning off by lowering the nic levels of your juice over time. I know lots and lots of people who have had success like that.

The only issue with that is a lot of people start upping nicotine levels and become more addicted, plus if you use a vap you look like a ****.

I say this as a person that chews a bag every two days.

I dipped for 14 years, from 83-97. At times Id dip up to 1 1/2 cans of Copenhagen a day. I've talked to a lot of guys over the years who've quit and it seems like the level of difficulty in putting it down varies greatly. I had great difficulty. For at least a month I had ZERO concentration at work. I gained a lot of weight, too. And the kicker is I still crave a dip every now and then, especially when I have to work late at night. For me, quitting was well worth it - peace of mind. I always figured, with my luck, I'd be one of those guys with 1/3 of his face sawed off. The birth of my son was one of the main motivating factors. I really didn't want him picking up the habit, and he never did. Good luck.

Oh and to finally answer your question: sunflower seeds and focussing on being a good role model for my son. and focussing on mental images of those dudes with sawed off jaws.

I've never understood addiction in the first place. I will go out on a saturday night and smoke a pack of cigs while drinking and then not smoke again for a week or two and never feel a craving or mood change from not smoking.

Quit smoking for good 11 yrs ago, after smoking for 17 yrs. Did it cold turkey.

You gotta want to quit. Don't try to do it for someone else. Because someone is nagging you or because you think someone wants you to. If you do, you won't stay quit.

.

Same reason some perfectly good people will have shoulder surgery and go nuts on Hydrocodone, and some don't - physiological make up has a lot to do with it.
