Has anyone been more dominant, more respected, more known in sports than Jordan?

Ali would be the only one I could imagine would challenge him on world wide recognition.

For those too young to remember watching Jordan play... well I guess it sucks for you.. go watch some videos..

more dominant
Ruth hit more homers than the rest of the league combined, and literally changed the game.

Wilt Chamberlain too was one of the greatest differences between one guy and the rest of the league , but he was a different kind of player - not as electric, just physically overmatching, and (more importantly) didn't have one-billionth the attitude and drive Jordan did

more respected
Ruth was literally a mythical, legendary figure throughout a lot of the world including US, Japan, South America.

more known
In his prime, Jordan may have been the most famous person alive, not just in sports.

My AP Human Geo text book said he was the most known person in the history of the world, alive or dead. Including Jesus and shite. But that was like 15 years ago.

He's the ultimate mismatch. Jordan was under 200 lbs for his first three titles. All the Jordan apologists learn that fact then take great pause. The NBA and athletes in general were completely different 20 years ago. He was 20-30 lbs lighter than Kobe.

Old people look at the NFL and still think the 85 Bears were the greatest defense ever. The average offensive lineman in the 1980s was 6' 4" and 270 lbs. Or the same weight as LeBron but three inches shorter. Put that in perspective. Jordan was a midget by today's standards.

No athlete worldwide will match or eclipse Jordan in notoriety in our lifetime. He changed everything. The guy is a brand that has proven it can stand the test of time. 8 year old kids that weren't alive during his career want to wear his shoes and jerseys.

Jordan was much quicker than Lebron and a much smarter player. Lebron has size on Jordan. That's it.

Athletes get better over time. The athletes of today would make Jordan seem average.

What made MJ special was that he was ahead of his time (and peers), and put a niche sport on the national stage in a way that had never been done before.

And, yes, I watched Jordan play live.

I would argue that Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were more dominant, but not more well known.

Jordan changed the world by making himself a brand.

Dammit...another vol/shaft post I agree with!

Marketing of a banana slug can work so it seems.
