Without this man, the Gamecocks would not be in the SEC. Wanna beat the Dawgs more than any other SEC team, but respect them for this man alone.

Dooley is a class act. Always has been. Represented Auburn and the University of Georgia well in his time.
So did Erskine Russell and Joel Eaves in their time as well.

One of the nicest people you will ever meet.
True story ... one time he tracked me down to thank me for something I did for Jim Carlen. We talked for probably 15 minutes. He's a super guy. Genuinely a good guy. When I told him I had gone to Coach Dietzel's funeral ... he had a great story to tell about Coach.
Vince Dooley is a total class act.
Wally Butts was a dick though.

My favorite Vince Dooley story is this. About 10 years ago, my great uncle Bill died. He was 84. He had lived his whole life in Charlotte but was a huge UGA fan, grad and donor. He was also a recruiter for UGA back when alums could do that. When he died, Vince Dooley was a pallbearer as was I. because Dooley went to Auburn, as did I, when we were picking up the casket, I said "war eagle coach". He simply said "dont let your uncle hear that...he'll roll over!"
True story.
When Derek was coaching UT and they went to a bowl in Nashville, I ran into both Coach Dooley and Barbara Dooley a the Dunkin Donuts near my house., Totally random. They stopped for a bite and a coffee on the way north. I reintroduced myself and retold the story. Vince smiled and remembered the occurrence. Nice folks the Dooleys.

Absolute truth. I have no reason to make that kind of story up. Whether you believe it is of no relevance.

I can tell you how it went down ... second hand but straight from the horses mouth to me, then to you.
When Paul Dietzel became coach at South Carolina in 1966, one of the first things he said was that he intended to, one day, see South Carolina in the SEC. It was only a couple of years after Ga Tech had left the SEC and Dietzel knew the SEC would soon be looking for a replacement.
He hated the ACC and the Tobacco Road crowd.
Dooley had also become head coach at Georgia in '64 and Dooley and Dietzel were fast friends ... but at the time Dooley did not have enough pull, for lack of tenure, to help make anything happen but he promised Coach Dietzel that if he was around long enough he would help to make it happen.
They became fast friends - really close.
Fast forward to 1974 and Dooley was firmly entrenched at Georgia but Dietzel was on his way out at SCAR ... but during his nine years he had upgraded facilities, won a ACC Championship and gotten us out of the ACC.
There was still talk, every year, of adding new members to the SEC and Dietzel called Dooley on the way out and said, "We've got SEC fans here, we've got the facilities, all we need is the opportunity ... don't let it die when I leave."
Dooley gave him his word when the time came that he would be on SC's side.
Enter Jim Carlen. Coach Carlen was well respected for his years at WVA and TT and over time he and Dooley developed a mutual respect and friendship ... especially because Carlen's teams always played tough against UGA and Carlen was the one that really started recruiting the state of Georgia heavily for SC.
Carlen would tell Dooley the same thing. "These fans, this program, needs to be in the SEC ... they deserve the chance."
Dooley was always outspoken about South Carolina fan support ... he still comes to games here when UGA plays. He was/is also friends with Pepper Rogers and Coach Rogers would always say that one day South Carolina would be a natural fit for the SEC.
Finally the opportunity rolls around in the early 90s and, true to his word, Coach Dooley, along with Bill Arnsparger (directed then Associate AD Jeremy Foley to help lobby for South Carolina) and Dietzel using his connections ... SC was invited to join.
Clemson was black-balled by all those schools and especially by Dooley at UGA and Dickey at Tennessee. Both Dooley and Dickey disliked Clemson because of their cheating history ... Dooley especially constantly battled Clemson's Pell and Ford for recruits in Georgia and Tennessee battled them for recruits in Knoxville and Western NC. They both commented that Clemson cheated on several occasions and subsequently Dooley got the Dooley Rule enacted because of Clemson.
Anyways ... FSU was also a player but everyone assumed they wouldn't join, as Bobby Bowden has since explained why, and FSU was not wanted by Florida ... which is why Arnsparger and Foley were so heavily involved.
Dooley comes to all the games up here when Georgia plays here because he is emotionally attached to his promise he once gave Paul Dietzel ... or so it is said.
Besides all of that - Vince Dooley is just a good man. One of my favorite coaches of all time.

3rd in all time wins; fitting that he was passed by SC's coach...

My Dooley story..
As an AU assistant coach in his first year, he was at my grandparents house to sign his very first recruit. There was no signing day and this was an actual signing. According to my grandmother he was super nervous.
When he got there, my grandmother took his coat for him.
After the signing was done and he was leaving, he asked where his coat was. My grandmother thought he asked where a coke was. She told him in the fridge.
Dooley goes to the fridge, opens it up, looks around, returns to the living room and tells my grandmother he checked the fridge but it wasn't there.
Btw, my mom has a picture of Dooley, the recruit and my granddad in the living room from that day.
