I understand Google will send you ads based on search history and stuff, but what happened to me today is taking it to a whole other level.

Today at work I was talking to my coworker on our office communicator instant messenger on my work computer. He said something about another coworker getting the "blending" position when he meant to say "blended" position (basically a job where you float between a couple different jobs). I made a stupid joke about the coworker getting a job in the Home Depot paint department (blending paints, get it? Lol!).

Well tonight I was just sitting on the toilet reading TD, when this ad popped up:

I never get Home Depot ads. I never search online for home improvement, paint, or Home Depot stuff as I live in an apartment. Did Google somehow have access to my office instant messenger, and was Google able to link my phone to my work computer? Or was it just random chance that the same day I mention "Home Depot paint department" in an office IM is the same day I get this ad on my phone?

And it's only getting worse. I've had issues with my phone telling Google where I am at all the time. I tried turning off Google's Nearby feature but everytime I walk into the store I still get those stupid notifications telling me to add pictures of the business I'm visiting or that the business I'm in has an app available for download.

I have yet to find a way to turn that crap off. I could always turn off location services, but I use Google maps a lot so I can't. I could also hide the notifications, but I want to stop Google from tracking me completely and that won't solve tge problem.

I guess it's shite we will have to put up with if we all want smartphones and tablets

Google records all data from the very first search you ever made.

Invasive SOB's

Knowing you were crapping of course they would use your vulnerable moment to sell you something, if Google were less heartless, they would have sent you free porn for your private crapper timer.

Google, Bing, and Yahoo, if they know how to save data, all save everything you search for. Nothing you do on the internet is private and I hope people realize that.

I avoid Google products when possible; I don't care for their blatant liberal progressive agenda. I use Opera as my browser and Bing as my search engine. And yes, I understand that Microsoft and most tech companies are owned/operated by liberals but at least they don't slap you in the face with their agenda.

Yea you are right about that. I was googling a female canadian chess player recently of the name Alexandra Botez. When i viewed this image. I started noticing this picture in ads on yahoo's home page that had nothing to do with Alex. The title would be a random ad for something but it would have this picture next to.

Yea i changed to Bing as well as my homepage search engine but will still use Google now and then when i feel the searches may be obscure or important.

I've seen ads for things I only talked about in fb messenger and things I only spoke out loud near my phone.

Try saying "I needed to buy X" a few times and then see what ads pop up.

No..only if you were logged into Google services at work, then I guess that could happen. I'd say just coincidence though.

google may actually be listening in thru your microphone as well. Therefore, if you are just sitting at home talking about anything, your ads may be tailored to what you were talking about in private conversation when you weren't even on your phone or computer.

If that isn't scary enough, google may be monitoring your private conversations to create a political profile on you and selling that information off.

Imagine how that information could come back to haunt you (IRS).

One day I was talking about engagement rings with my co workers and the next time I got on Facebook I was seeing sponsored ads for zales and kay jewelers. Had. Ever searched those or any other jewelry sites before.

The really scary thing to me anyway...is how much Google could shape something as fact.

That was tackled in the newest season of House of Cards. It's scary how much power the search engine really has when you sit back and think about it.

I was sitting at my desk with a co-worker and he was telling me about a post he just had posted on Instagram, my phone was sitting face up and about 5 mins after we were talking about it my phone lights up "Channon Talley is now on Instagram"...I do not follow him, it was pretty weird.

A worse problem will be when you're talking on the phone or computer with someone and then later find out the person denies ever having been in that conversation with you.

I was looking for a small parts cabinet for my shop. Just one of those small cabinets with tons of drawers so I could store and organize all my samples and masters for my bait business.

I searched on Amazon, ONCE !! Ordered one from them and that was it. That was about a month ago. Every day I still get adds on every page advertising the exact cabinet that I bought

fricking pisses me off

I wont go into specifics but ive also experienced ads for things ive talked about in the last six months. Very specific things. And the conversations were in person, not on phone or im. Just me and wife talking about furniture or something, while watching matlock reruns, and next morning the first ad online is furniture.

Weird shite lately.
