TLDR: Adult woman who had been vaccinated as a child but was on immunosuppressive drugs for an unrelated condition acquired the measles during a recent hospital outbreak and died after the virus infiltrated her lung tissue and caused pneumonia.

There have been other cases of people with measles dying from secondary causes recently, but this is the first death directly caused by the measles virus in over a decade.

How is it directly from the measles if she died of pneumonia?

i believe measles works like HIV. you don't necessarily die from HIV, it just makes you susceptible to other diseases and ailments.

quote:

Complications occur in about 30% and may include diarrhea, blindness, inflammation of the brain, and pneumonia among others.[4][6] Rubella (German measles) and roseola are different diseases.[7]

I'm the furthest thing from an anti-vaxxer, but I suspect if this wasn't one of your pet causes, you might not be impressed with a single death.

The measles virus can directly infect the lungs and cause pneumonia in immunosuppressed people.

I'm not "impressed" with it, it's just another in a long line of negatives linked to the anti-vaccination movement. In and of itself it isnt too notable.

This is true, but in rarer cases it can directly be the cause of death. Either way the disease effectively resulted in their death, it's just that in this case the virus was isolated from her lung tissue and is thus the undeniable cause of death.

We should probably just note how effective the vaccine is. One death in twelve years is a hell of a stat.

I agree

However, we should be reffering to measles like we do diphtheria in this country: In the past tense. There hasnt been a single case of it reported in the US in 11 years.

Is it coming-in with the illegal immigrants?

Illegal immigration isn't something that's just suddenly occurred in the last 5-10 years. If it is, we were at least protected as a population from it before the anti-vaccination movement. Even the immunosuppressed through "herd immunity". That seems to be the bigger issue.

As I understand it, it's always been around in un-vaccinated populations. Illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, tourists, even parts of the US have pockets of it. And it's airborne - someone who has it coughs, in a store. You walk into the store 2 hours later, and if you're not vaccinated, you could breathe it in and catch it. The vaccine makes it very easy to prevent, unless you have a compromised immune system.

The fear of vaccines by some has led to lots of people now refusing to vaccinate their kids - and that's their choice. But then, imo, their children shouldn't be allowed to attend public schools (which require vaccinations), and if they take that child to Disney World and they get sick - the parents have no one to blame but themselves.

Sounds like the situation was triggered by a side-effect to pharmaceuticals.

What was her condition that required taking drugs that suppress the body's defenses? That seems to be the real issue here.

Being strongly in favor, or strongly against it is what frustrates me.

----

I'm not a total anti-vaxxer, but I'm not a total pro-vaxxer.

I have zero doubt that the profit motive has created a situation where more vaccines than necessary are being given, and I suspect many of these vaccines are more dangerous than they need to be.

I'm also 100% certain that these large pharmaceutical companies have suppressed negative information on vaccines.

It's also 100% a fact that the former person in charge of the CDC, who was granted the power to determine if a vaccine is safe, later became the head of Merck vaccine division. That's highly suspect to me.

Agreed. We will see more shite like this with the proliferation and new normality of being heavily medicated. I think, that in some weird way, people will be weeded out by the medicines that were supposed to save them.
