Black-rimmed hipster glasses were kind of edgy and made an anti-fashion statement 20-something years ago when Lisa Loeb wore them, and then Rivers Cuomo stole the Buddy Holly look.

Then it was Every Fat Girl who wore them, to look "interesting" instead of just fat.

Why has this grunge-era moment of anti-fashion had such staying power?

Mine aren't black(tortoise) and I wear them because they're more comfortable and more durable than the wire rimmed glasses. I've worn that style for 10 or 15 years, but I mostly wear my contacts so they're not everyday glasses.

Been wearing the same style glasses for 20 years. Not about to change them because millenials think it's cool now. The style will pass back into safe, sweet obscurity soon enough. Been seeing a resurgence of Sally Jesse Rafael style glasses everywhere. It's only a matter of time.
