Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? I have a problem in a house on my block. I have called the police, JCSO, city agencies, health department, etc, and have gotten no where.

I know, I know...I am poor and my neighborhood sucks.

Shouldn't the homeowners be the ones calling the cops?

By squatters, do you mean someone camping out in a vacant house that they do not rent or own?

If it isn't your house, I don't know if you can do anything. Whomever has legal control of the property would almost certainly have to make the complaint.

If it is really bad, you might be able to file a civil suit against the owner to compel them to act.

I would call the police and tell them you suspect that there is a meth lab. I would think it would be the Health Department, because of safety and stuff, but if they didn't help, I don't know what to say.

Is it in the city limits of Birmingham?

not my house, the house next door to me. I have been trying to do something about it for about 2 years now, off and on, and that is pretty much the answer I have gotten.

it is a weird old fricker that started living in the garage. the house lights were never on, but the garage was lit up by C-Clamp light fixtures. The house itself has been going back to nature. with windows always open and vines growing through the roof and wall.

I'd at least go into public records, see who owns the property, and see if they are up to date on their taxes and stuff. You don't want the squatters to have squatters' rights.

This. If anything, try to contact the owners, inform them of the situation and how they can be held accountable in civil court if those people do something criminal from that location, and they've done nothing to get rid of them.

Meth lab was my first thought. But I am pretty sure the guy is on hillbilly heroin. He lives down the street, in a house of equal disrepair. drives his piece of shite buick regal from three houses down at all sorts of weird times to take bags of trash out of the house and drive them up to the curb. it is very similar to the move "the Burbs"

This is in Birmingham proper, on the edge of Mtn Brook and Homewood.

Definitely go look at the tax info, apso if you want to inspire the owners into action, start reporting the disrepair of the house and grounds to the cops. They will get fines for all that shite. Also mention that if that squatter happens to injure himself in a condemned house, the owners will be held responsible.

If he lived in Mountain Brook, they would lock them in jail for not mowing the yard.

Crestwood. That explains why people are dragging their feet. Some areas have revitalized in there, some are still like their counterpart across the tracks in Woodlawn.

You may have to start going to City Hall meetings and complain every week until something is done. Sometimes, you can't get anything done, until they're sick of seeing and hearing you.
