Congrats, you paid $7,400 for something that's worth maybe $3,000 and are paying an insurance premium for $16k of coverage when the insurance company will be able to replace the ring for probably half of what you paid for it.

I didn't go through a jeweler. Had I gone through a jeweler I would've paid a helluva lot more. Again, I went through a wholesaler who designed the ring herself. Quite happy with what I got for what I paid.

it's been appraised for $16k and I have it insured for said $16k. the insurance company doesn't get to choose the diamond in which it is replaced if lost or stolen.

I'm also not poor and cheap. Had no problem paying what I paid for it.

But you should pay what you can reasonably afford. If that's 2,200 which by your own logic would actually be a $700 ring then go for it.

I'm considering buying a cubic zirconia and telling everyone it's a real diamond (like anyone will ask if it's a real diamond anyway). Anyone who just takes a quick look at it will have no idea, and if my lady wants to go get it inspected to make sure, which I highly doubt will happen, then I won't care if I lied to her.

I pay something like $97 dollars a year for insurance for my fiancés ring which is appraised just under 10K. If he owns a home,
jewelry is covered up to 10K on most plans as well. Also, the jnsurance company doesn't just get to give you a new ring for what it "should cost", that defeats the purpose of insuring it for X amount of dollars.
Getting engaged is a happy time, quit complaining about something you have zero control over. It is what it is.

The ring I got my so was a reproduction in white gold of a platinum ring that was from the 1930s. The 3/4 ct. diamond I found at a local shop. I paid more than I would have liked, but she absolutely loves the ring, and so does everyone else that sees it. It looks nothing like the bland or over-the-top diamond-encrusted shite most of the chain jewelry stores sell.

The key is look for a ring that suits her. When you find it, buy it. Definitely haggle a little to get the best price, but don't cheap out. She is literally going to wear this item every day for the rest of her life.

CZ's look mostly like diamonds, but they don't refract light quite as well, so they don't have the same "sparkle". Most people won't notice this at first. However, CZ's have one other issue, they tend to get cloudy over time. Diamonds will sorta do this, but it's just surface dust and can be easily cleaned off to look like new. CZ's not so much. The cz may look just like a new diamond the day you buy it, but a year or two later, it will look dull and cloudy.

If she's not very smart or attentive, she may not notice, but if she has an eye for these kinds of things, your arse is cubic zirconium grass.

I ended up buying from JamesAllen.com.

14k yellow gold solitaire setting ($440)
Diamond - carat: .46, color: D, clarity VS2, cut: very good ($1,190)
Automatic $66 coupon/discount

Total paid: $1,564 (free shipping, no taxes)

I thought more about my plan to get a CZ and tell everyone it's a diamond, but when I learned CZ's get cloudy over time, I figured I would get caught at some point and that's just not something I want to deal with. Overall, I feel pretty good about the purchase. It's certainly a decent dent to my savings, but I won't lose sleep over it.

Congrats! Going with a real diamond is definitely the smart move. You would've been caught at some point.

You got it under budget as well. I would still get it appraised but that's your call. Definitely insure it though.

Thank you!

I'm not inclined to get insurance. The way I look at it is that I wouldn't buy collision coverage for my car if my car was worth only $1,500, so why would I do it for a ring? Am I missing something?

You want to find a way to buy from the cutting operations in India.

Most of the world's diamonds are cut in India and in those diamond markets are where the best values are. One of my clients is an exec. w/ Walmart's jewelry dept. I've already made him promise me to buy my diamonds there if I ever have the need.

You wouldn't be paying very much and as someone mentioned earlier, if you own a home you may already be covered for the ring.

Obviously it's entirely up to you. Just ask if she loses the ring can you replace it at full cost?

The insurance quote I got is for $30/year at an "added value" of $2,200. I think it's a wash, but I'd just prefer not to have another insurance bill. Replacing a $1,500 item would suck, but I could do it. If I couldn't, I just wouldn't replace it until I could.

Congrats. I came very close to getting mine from JA.

Glad you went with a diamond. First time your fiance would take it to get cleaned, the jeweler would have informed her it was a CZ (to protect their company from being accused of swapping). Sounds like you got a good one

As for insurance, I think it's worth it. Less than $3 a month gives you the peace of mind that if it falls down the drain or the ring is scuffed or the setting fails, you don't have to pay anything to get it repaired or replaced. But that's just me...I'm a worrier.

Good luck on the proposal. Make it unique

My Mom gave Hubby my great-grandmother's engagement ring to give to me. Anyone who thinks it's too small can kiss my arse. I love it.

He says I'm the best bargain he ever got because I came with my own ring!

Thanks! Really glad you told me about those online jewelry sites. So much better than stores where you get over excited saleswomen talking to you and staring at you while you're trying to think about what you want. Made the process much more bearable.

Between the rising cost of things like engagement rings and just wedding costs in general, it makes a ring that can be upgraded later and eloping very very tempting.

I tried to pitch this idea, but her mom was more than willing to foot the bill for the wedding and I know how important family is to her. Plus, all her cousins have had big, crazy fun weddings, so I know she wanted to have something our own, but in the same vein.

Since I had a really great job at the time, I spent more than I should have on the ring, but the thing is gorgeous. Plus, I have the option to trade the diamond in, in the future, and get at least as much as I paid for it towards a larger diamond.
