Distance between stopped vehicles at traffic lights

Do any of y'all have any rules set on how close or far away you get from the cars in front of you when stopped at a red light? My grandfather told me that you should always be able to see the tires of the car in front of you. Reason I ask is because I've noticed lately that people just get very close to the cars in front of them at red lights and I saw a car rear end someone and because the cars in front of them were so close it involved 4 cars.

I don't really think about it unless we're going uphill, then I give a car's length in case they are driving a stick and aren't very good.

Police officer told me to be able to see their tires to have room to escape if someone tries to carjack you.

Enough distance where I can escape without hitting the car in front of me.
I'll get as close as I can to let a car turn right on a red light though. I hate the assholes that won't scoot up to let me turn.

I pretty much follow this. Though also on this topic when I use to drive my old truck I hated when people stopped right behind me when on a hill as I knew it would roll back since it was stick. But now on my new car that's also stick it doesn't roll back on hills (and being much better at driving stick really helps with that)

Smart man. Real steep hills, you will roll back some regardless.

True. I've driven a stick my whole life and I still need a little buffer on steep hills.

It drove me crazy when I drove a stick and someone got right on my bumper when stopped on a hill. Never rolled back into anyone, but a few close calls when I first started driving a stick.

I see cars creep up very close to me from behind. I leave enough room so that I can creep forward to get a little space between me and the car behind me, but still have room with the car in front of me.

Drives me crazy too. Never rolled into anyone, but a couple times in the mountains, it was closer than I would like.
Luckily, I don't have to worry about that here in New Orleans. Hell, I almost never have a foot on the brake here.

You should always be close enough to safely leave your truck, walk up and slap the phone out of the hand of the bitch in front of you, and safely return to your truck, before the light changes.

You should be at least a car length from the intersection if you're the first car (count 2 seconds before proceeding after light turns green) and a car to car and half length from any car.
Why?
Most intersection accidents happen within 2 seconds after the light change. Also, if you keep that distance and a car hits you from behind it doesn't send you into the intersection or into the car in front of you.
Another tip, do not turn your tires into a left turn until you are actually ready to turn. If a car hits you from behind you go straight instead of into oncoming traffic.
Also, look ahead approx 15 seconds and frequently look into all mirrors. Always try to have 3-5 seconds between you and the car in griping while driving.

I always try to see pavement between my car and the car in front. Your grandfather had a great idea.
If you get bumped, you are responsible for any damage in front of you.
So douche bangs into your bumper, he has no insurance, your car bumps into next car, you pay for damage in front.

Seriously? Wouldn't the car in the front be far more likely to be carjacked?

Enough distance that I won't hit the guy if I take off faster than he does once the light turns green. I always put my foot on the pedal and get moving super quickly once the light turns green. Some people especially women drivers wait for 2 seconds which I find annoying.
