I've been doing biceps/triceps together, and shoulders/chest together for a couple of months. Switching it up. Right now I am doing 8 sets on each exercise, 6-8 reps to failure, adjusting weight as needed. Been seeing good results for an older guy.

My old arse is getting in shape, gonna run a half marathon by end of next year

No. Yesterday was chest, shoulders and calves. Running today. Tomorrow is arms, back and upper legs.

My trainer writes my workouts and diets for me. We do chest by itself, back/biceps, delts/triceps, and legs. As long as I do every rep of every set as instructed and eat exactly what I'm told, the results are phenomenal.
