California college choices for the kid

My middle kid and basketball-dunking-extraordinaire has decided to settle down and get an education. He's been attending a CC in California for a few years and because of his good grades and because he's poor (as he's no longer my dependent) he'll have tuition waived at the 4 schools he's applied to and been accepted to: Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UC Irvine. And yeah, this is one reason why California is going bankrupt, but that's for another day. He wants to major in English - engineer father has no idea why but is glad he's settling down, so what the hell. English makes it a no-brainer: it's Berkeley. But the rub is Berkeley won't take him until the '16 spring semester over lack of space in the Fall class. The other 3 can take him in the Fall. So my question for California people (I know we have some) is what would your recommendation be? I know my preference but welcome other opinions. Pretend housing costs are irrelevant. TIA, including all the wiseass replies.

Go somewhere that takes him on your time frame. Doubt the school matters that much with an eng degree and taking a year off is almost always a bad idea for college.
Obviously I'm not from Cali but there you go.

By "finally settling down", I'm assuming his kid already took a year off of college or maybe more.
I don't know about any of this so I can't give a good answer

He's 27, so yeah - he took off and then took off some more.
As far as the schools go, I was hopelessly biased and didn't think it would make a difference. But after looking into it a bit Berkeley consistently comes out as the best English major school in the country. (UCLA is also up there.) So there's that. I suppose that whether that means anything is highly dependent on what you do with the degree. But I'm a stranger in a strange land, here. I don't know that I've ever met an English major.

Let him go to Berkely so he can teach social justice and mold young warriors

UC Irvine has a nice Campus in Orange county and a good school.

UCLA. Stick him in a dorm for a year. Cheaper overall, I'm betting, than UC-Irvine.

You've met lawyers that were English majors you just didn't know it
Send him to UCLA this fall so he can finish school and get started on his career... What if he goes to Cal and then his interests shift away from English ?

Does he care which school he goes to? If Berkeley is his dream school tell him to just wait.
If he doesn't care..just go to one of the others. The graduate school he goes to will matter a lot more anyway.

What about Pepperdine? Also does he like Norcal or Socal?

Berkeley is an excellent choice for any major offered and UCLA is about just as good.
UC-Davis is a very very good school, but a little bit remote (about halfway to Sacramento from the East Bay)
I really don't know much about Irvine other than it was the southern version of UC-Davis (ag school), but almost all the UC campuses provide quality undergraduate and graduate education.
As mentioned earlier, his choice of graduate or professional school will be more important.

berkley... and make him get a double major in something more generally useful like comp sci or economics. I majored in a language, and had I not had a double major in a quantitative discipline as well I'd be screwed.
My uncle gave me that advice and I reluctantly decided to heed it, and today I'm glad I listened. At the time I almost dismissed him, but that's the best advice I received going into college.

My brother went to Pepperdine. Fantastic school and you can't beat the view.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. We should go to college to learn, not to party. That he's more mature will benefit him greatly in his studies.
UCLA would be my choice. The great name will open doors for him long into the future.

A degree from any of the UC schools is a good thing. I went to Berkeley, and it is a great place, but for an English degree, any other UC school will be fine. I wouldn't put it off just to go to Berkeley.

This isn't a troll, but what does one do with an English degree outside of teaching?
I can't really give you any valid advice, but on name brand alone and network I would go to USC.

UCI because they are the Anteaters.
If he is uncircumcised, he might could be the mascot.

If he's 27 can't he kinda figure it out on his own?
