In a Sentimental Mood by Duke Ellington

wrote on the spot at a club to make his friend feel better who was getting rejected by girls, and the song has the perfect balance of feeling blue and feeling optimistic

plus it's extremely versatile and can be played quite a few different ways, up tempo, slow, smooth jazz, block style i've even heard a samba fusion version of it that sounded good.

Love that song. Amazing that it was on the same album as Stairway.

I still think Misty Mountain Hop was their best song. Even though it was never on a original album.

Literally says "IYO" in the subject of the thread. There are no wrong answers, just ones that don't jive with your opinion

I'll play the contrarian for a second.

I get that opinion topics are subjective and literally any answer is acceptable. But I think a lot of people are just listing songs they like at the moment. It's not "what are some of your favorite songs" it's "Best song EVER" which should signify the peak, the absolute pinnacle of musical achievement. The best song that has ever graced the pathways of your eardrums. There is not another piece of recorded music that you would say is better. And we get people saying songs by diddy and rob zombie?

I mean yeah, those may be your favorite songs, but the BEST EVER? Cmon.

Dark side of the moon, time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

----

The lyrics are pretty powerful as well. IDK what my #1 is, but this one is definitely top 5.

There were just so many better songs on that album than Time. I know that Dark Side gets all the credit when Floyd is talked about due to its incredible streak of top sales but I truly believe Wish you were here was better

But a good one never the less

Which would you go with? Btw I'm not arguing at all, I love talking about the subject matter obviously ha.

But there's only 9 songs listed on DSOTM, and nobody is going to say on the run is their favorite. Just genuinely curious about the "so many better" comment.

Hard to pick one. Favorites off the top of my head:

Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
Voodoo Child Slight Return - Jimmie Hendrix
Roxanne - The Police
Just Got Paid - ZZ Top

Honestly, I think Animals, is their best studio cd. Dogs may be my favorite of theirs. Pigs and Sheep are great songs as well. When I first got the cd, I was kinda disappointed, but now it is probably my favorite.
