Best/safest place to stay in Mobile aea for one night?

We are going with my MIL to her high school reunion in Houston next weekend. Plan is to leave Atlanta around 2 PM Thursday and hopefully make it as far as Mobile before stopping for the night.
It has been a while since I had to find lodging in Mobile. What is the best area to get a hotel (safe, affordable, not downtown)? My first thought was something on Airport, out around USA. Thoughts or suggestions?

Where in mobile is she? Tillmans corner is redneck, but safe and probably cheap.

It all boils down to where mil lives. If she's in west mobile, there will probably be something decent close by. It's not like you'll find great options in Satsuma or Creola. Maybe a country motel 6 or Indian hotel. Those are safe enough, I'm just not sure how low you'll go.

There are a lot of hotels on the I-65 service road south of Airport. Also, a nice Marriott by Bel-Air mall, but just a suggestion.... Why not drive 1 hour further and stay at Beau Rivage or Hard Rock in Biloxi?
