Anyone have an opinion on which Hawaiian island is the best to visit for a laid-back nature type experience?

Kauai....been to all the islands and that one is the best.

I've only been to Oahu and the big Island of Hawaii. Oahu is cool. You got Honolulu, Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, diamond head, and the famous North shore surfing spot. The big island had volcanic activity when I went years back, and wasn't very pretty. All the islands have great nature though. My buddy went to Maui, he took a lot of pictures and it looked amazing! He's moving there now. You really can't go wrong with Oahu or Maui IMO

Kauai.... I've never been but I heard from someone who's been to all the islands and that one is the best.

That would be California

I've been to Oahu and Maui. Both were awesome, but Maui was more laid back. I've heard that Kauai is even more so, but I've never had the pleasure.

Maui, then Kauai, Hawaii (the Big Island) and then Oahu. I liked Maui the best because of the extinct volcano Haleakala.

Maui.... Laid back easy access to the beach if your in a condo. The golf is awesome on either course but I played Kapalua(sp?) every cotton pickin day and loved it. And drink all the bikini blonde you can handle. Going back in 5 years if Im still around.

Have been to all the islands of Hawaii except kaho'olawe and Niihau (The forbidden island); Kauai is without a doubt the best.

Been to Oahu, Maui, and Kauai and Kauai is easily the best. Incredible natural beauty. The NaPali Coast. "The Grand Canyon of the Pacific", waterfalls everywhere. Only about 50k people. There is a reason they have filmed so many movies on Kauai. Kauai is the oldest island so it has the most vegetation and erosion giving it tremendous character.
Maui is really nice and much larger but just not as consistently gorgeous as Kauai and far more populated.
Oahu has some nice parts to it but really crowded and commercialized. Lots of history there.
Haven't been to the Big Island but its the newest island and its huge.

I can't speak for all of the islands because i've only been to 3 others..But as a resident of the Big Island i'd say if nature is your thing..you'd love coming here. Volcanos, caves, 14,000 foot mountain, incredible beaches and coral reefs, ranches with horseback riding, dozens of thousand foot waterfalls all within hiking distance, etc. Oh did I mention it's much tougher to get island fever here?

Maui is by far the best.

Kauai is the most laid back and scenic. Beautiful beaches, coastline, and mountains.
Oahu isn't really all that crowded outside of Honolulu. It's got some really nice, quiet neighborhood areas and beaches too. It has a little bit of everything.
Maui was pretty nice as well. The road to Hana was one of the coolest/exhilarating things I've ever done on a trip.
The Big Island wasn't my favorite, but there's still plenty of nice beaches around, especially by Kona. Hilo has the Volcano National Park, and you may get a chance to see flowing lava. There's something worth seeing on every island for sure.

Question - is there a BAD island in Hawaii?

Maui is the best.
Kauai is probably prettier, but Maui isn't far behind yet it has more entertainment stuff to do yet no large overly congested city.
Maui is perfect.

I don't know if it's the "best" island or not, but if you end up in Maui and hike into (and back out of) the caldera of Haleakala, you will not be disappointed.
I've been all over the world and seen a number of historical and natural sights, but the Haleakala caldera is one of the most memorable.
If I can give another piece of advice, it would be to forego the tour group (although our guide gave some great information), rent a vehicle to drive to the top and pack a lunch and some water. You'll save hundreds of dollars and get the exact same experience.
