Born a slave, he later became a deputy U.S. Marshall. There is a statue honoring him in downtown Fort Smith, should you ever find yourself in the vicinity. TbirdSpur's great grandpappy?

“The fact that Bass Reeves was born enslaved and then later was authorized to arrest white men, all without any sense of grudge or revenge, is telling,” he said of Reeves, who arrested more than 3,000 felons in Fort Smith and the former Indian Territory during his time as a lawman for Judge Isaac C. Parker’s federal court in Fort Smith. “His character was so great, that no one really cares about his race or color. - See more at: https://swtimes.com/features/bass-reeves-documentary-air-sunday#sthash.Ifr2RKwn.dpuf

Parker's Marshalls weren't feared for no reason.

The clip tells the story of Reeves "playing dead" when the man he was tracking shot at him. Then, when the guy approached, he shot him. Pretty badass, IMO.

Fort Smith has some good Old West history.
