I've had sciatica since Jan last year. Have it in my left leg and am starting to have it in the right leg. It hasn't hurt my work life or anything but I want to get back into lifting but I am u sure of what route to take. Will not get surgery. Should I see chiropractor or what?
I've tried pain medicine

i've had it. Just take your time on your way back. I would suggest sports rehab a couple times a week for a while, if you can. Electro stimulation and strengthen/stretch. I'm not a fan of chiropractors - nor are most the sports med guys i've seen over the years.

Meds help the pain and inflammation but they're only a mask to the problem.

You need to become a religious stretcher. Before your feet hit the ground every morning - knees to chest and stretch hammies. In the gym spend less time lifting heavy and more time on core strengthening. Allow for more time than you ever have to stretch after lifting, too - especially glutes and hammies.

If the pain returns then you'll probably need an MRI to see what things look like but it's almost always the same structural issue - L3 is pressing on the sciatic nerve and making it very angry.

Stretching is a great suggestion.

Chiro...total waste of time and $.

Find a good neurosurgeon, not an orthopedic. Do your homework to find the best.

Avoid surgery if you can. If it gets bad enough, you'll have surgery.

Hit the heavy deadlifts, strengthen your sciatic nerve.

Chiropractic is very effective for sciatica. You should definitely ease back into your routine. You may want to find assistance with your motor pattern for leg workouts to make sure you have proper form and are stabilizing your spine.

I'll keep this in mind. Stretching has become painful, but pain can be therapeutic

I still want to one day pursue dream of being a strongman. frick human design. Discs are necessary, but it is a design flaw.

The one chiropractor I went to has a decompression table that he says has worked wonders for clients. He said after the 8 week routine, the disc will have been pushed back in and you will be pain free. He also said after a year of no hard lifting, you will be back to or near 100%

He wants $2500 or $110 per treatment for this

I would rec getting a second opinion from a respected neurosurgeon (i.e. one that has a conservative approach). You don't want to invest that amount of time/money and be at the same spot a year from now

Have you gotten an MRI?

I was 18 when i got my first Laminectomy for the first herniated disc. The pain was off the charts before then and after the surgery was almost nonexistent. Went back to normal after that.

Flash forward 8 years and I was working construction last summer and was helping lift a 400 Ib backup battery for a CT Lab and herniated another disc. At least it was the last disc with degenrative disc disease, the rest of my discs are fine

2 Epidurals the last 2 months and the pain comes and goes. I'm used to being stiff and walking around abnormally for awhile until I loosen up. I have nerve damage in my right foot and have busted my arse on the stairs numerous times. Other than that I'm fine. Doc said my body should heal itself over the next several years but I might always have a little discomfort in my right leg

Yep, I have a 4mm protrusion. Pain has been bad at times since last January, but never so bad that I can't walk or anything

Since I've done a little stretching this week, the pain in my right leg that I thought was new sciatic nerve man (still could be) has been completely absent. Hopefully that means that it wasn't bilateral sciatica after all

Keep that stretching up then I'm bad about stretching. But in my view it never helped me too much as my discs were basically both collapsed and the only thing that gave me temporary relief were the Epidurals.
