Because why not? South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State, LSU, Mississippi and Tennessee would not post their SAT writing, so I averaged their other scores. (These are according to collegedata.com)

I don't know about the others but UT pretty much uses the ACT for admissions because that's what the state of Tennessee pays for in High Schools. SAT applicants are often kids who are out of state or sometimes kids who took both tests knowing the SAT didn't matter for UT.

I donno, but based on the numbers, Auburn does appear to be the better place and I don't like either one of your schools.

1 point of a difference in the ACTs, yes, but nearly 50 in the SATs. Plus, they earn more than Alabama grads.

Tuscaloosa's going to retort with acceptance rate.

It's not Auburn's fault that a million redneck Alabama fans apply to go there every year. I heard ole Carl Cooter McGill just applied for the 34th straight time and thought his 50th birthday would warrant an acceptance letter.

This is just pathetic that offseason threads have come to comparing ACT scores

Bama and Auburn grads know that there is little to no difference between the two schools academically. Science, Tech, Engineering and Veterinary minded students go to Auburn. Business, Law, Medicine and Liberal Arts minded students go to Bama. Simple as that. Both are big state schools in the SEC and both pull students from the same pool of applicants. Squabbling over a 1 point difference on the ACT is really silly considering how similar the two schools are.

OP is bored on a holiday. Go to the grocery store and buy some meat to grill or something.

... the smart kids choose Auburn over bama?

Alabama ranks higher in every major ranking publication, more National Merit Scholars, more Academic All-Americans, and now the only student in the SEC to have turned down every single Ivy League school to attend.

34% of students at Auburn major in Business or Engineering.

39% of students at Bama major in Business or Journalism.

Alabama has substantially more students/graduates. I can't imagine why Auburn grads might be making a couple hundred dollars a month more on average. I wonder what the salary difference is between a journalist and an engineer.

If you want a true look at it, compare the salary averages of individuals majoring in the same field - from different schools.

I think I'm getting old. The lowest SAT score average is higher than mine because I took it on the tail end of the 1600 era.

In auburn's defense about the acceptance rate, they aren't exactly the state bandwagon school like the other so they don't have everyone and their mama applying to coattail the athletic department.

It happens. A few years back, the counselor at the high school my Dad taught at in Chicago told me she had a lot of "underqualified" kids applying to USCw because they liked the football team and thought it would be fun to attend college in L.A.

For reference, according to NACE, graduates of journalism programs earn an average starting salary of $40,900. Graduates of engineering programs earn a starting salary of around $56,000-$57,000 depending on the type of engineering.

In actuality your parents were just wanting you to feel good about yourself. It has always been this way.

OK, it was 1600 when I took it too

We've already had this debate. He's going to med school, so undergrad is worthless anyway. I was just rebutting your friend's comment that "all the smart people choose Auburn" - which is silly.

It can differ greatly within an engineering discipline as well. Where you're willing to relocate to and how much of a work week you're willing to put in (public versus private sector).

I think correlation has been pretty well established as causation when talking about the relationship between success in sports and an uptick in applications. It's not as weird as you'd think because the sports are essentially (quasi-)free advertising. You're getting your name out there, you're getting images of your student body and frequently of your campus on national TV, et cetera, so it's not just about sports per se. If we lived in a country where college poetry slams were big business, the televising of said events would work the same way.

Yep. And either way, engineers are making substantially more than journalists right out of college.

That certainly would account for the $250-$350/month that the average Auburn grad is earning more than the average Bama grad.

I am not taking a swipe at Alabama. Why would I give a shite if Auburn was anyones backup school? I went there for aviation as UGA or anyone else in the state of Ga did not have one.

For someone to turn down Ivy league education to go to Bama IS a horrible decision. Would be a horrible decision to go to Auburn if offered by Ivy league as well. I am just saying that particular person decision making is piss poor.

Dammit, my guidance counselor was in on it too. Wait...now that I think about it, it was strange my dad asked her how she was enjoying her new Escalade the day after I got my results. Huh. I guess a smarter person would have made the connection sooner.
