On Wednesday, information was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children Organization and ALEA indicating that child pornography was recently downloaded to a specific computer on campus. The university's office of technology helped identify which computer and Dennis Rae Ledbetter, 46, developed as a suspect, police said.

This looks like a child porn sting. I'm not a fan of the government using pictures of victims to catch predators.

I am. As long as they aren't creating the child porn, I don't really have a problem with them using the images as bait for predators.

Auburn hasn't had university police in over a decade. Consolidated with the city police

That said, hope that guy ends up somebody's bitch in prison for the rest of his life

ETA:

Article does say university police tho maybe they split again

Also, how does Auburn University have a police lieutenant? The Auburn city police provide campus protection.

I didn't read your link. I don't care how they catch pedophiles.

I wonder if you would even post this if not for the Auburn slant.

I'm all in for Auburn LEOs to catch and punish any and all pedophiles. I'd scream War Eagle every day if it meant 1 less pedophile each time I yelled it.

You're absolutely right. They should find volunteers for these types of things.

That isn't how these things generally work and it doesn't sound like a sting. NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) maintains a database of the hash values for known child porn files. The hash is a value that is effectively a digital fingerprint. No two files will have the same hash. Many providers use these values to detect CP crossing their networks and notify LE when it is found. That, and not a sting, is likely what happened here.
