Auburn Police Shoot Mentally Ill Woman Who Supposedly Threatened Them With A Knife While Fully Aware of Her Situation

I know a lot of people will side with the police on this one, and I'm not saying any officers should be punished, but if our law enforcement officials really think this is how to handle a situation like this then we need to really take a look at how these men and women are being trained. That Woman didn't have to die.

Edit: Changed girl to Woman. Excuse me for misrepresenting the information. That was not my intention.

Don't threaten police with a weapon if you want to live. It's not that tough

It probably is pretty tough for a bipolar person already in a bad mental state.

I wouldn't know what that is like, but I think ANY person should know not to charge police with a weapon if you don't want them to shoot you.

ya they certainly could have handled it better. But, if a girl runs at you with a knife (I don't know what she was doing when she was shot). Are you gonna risk an eye trying to take her down the hard way for whatever crap salary those cops get?

It would be racist and sexist not to shoot her, tbh. RIP Michael Brown

We are all about equality now.

People suffering from mental illness don't think rationally. Your ignorance is showing.

Race and gender have no bearing in this. The point is she didn't have to die. A frazzled girl with a knife should be able to be stopped by police officers with proper training with very little risk to themselves.

Also, she was 36. Plenty of time for knife training. Stop calling grown woman girls, it's offensive and shows your rape culture that you make woman out to be little girls. Delete this post

According to the police report, Melissa exited the car "armed with a weapon and charged the officers in a threatening manner." While the Boarts do not doubt Melissa threatened the officer, they believe the killing was unnecessary.

The lawyer claims, "Any kind of decent police training would teach you how to deal with people with mental health issues. [...] If you go around shooting them all just because they have a knife in their hand, that's terribly wrong."

If you have a knife or any other weapon and you charge at police then they are completely justified in putting you down.

This is just another case of people who fail to place blame where it belongs. Why should you be held accountable for your actions when you can sue somebody instead?

It's confusing, why couldn't his girl be tazed or pepper sprayed. The family called the cops with the express intent so they could stop her from hurting herself.

Girl? She was a 36 year old woman... not some middle school student.

I don't give a shite how much training someone has... you can't expect a police officer to take on a knife wielding suspect with his bare hands. They have the same justification as anyone else in that situation... the right to defend yourself against serious harm.

The point is she didn't have to threaten the police with a knife. It's obvious this "girl" wanted to die and she got what she wanted.

I respect your statement. It's your first one that bugs me. If you don't know what it's like, then choose your words carefully.

I think blame should be placed on the person threatening others with a deadly weapon.

Sorry if that offends you

While I agree with this statement, underestimating someone is just as deadly. What if she would have stabbed the cop and killed him? These situations never have happy endings, and I wasnt there to witness any of the occurence, but to just make a statement like "POS cops shouldnt have done that" is a bit harsh without being there.

I for one have always and will always support cops, sure there are bad apples in law enforcement, as there are in every other profession or demograph in the world, however if I am in trouble I am calling 9-1-1 and taking my chances with those who put their lives on the line for complete strangers every day and get paid shite to do it.
