If you have not watched it on Netflix, then you are doing yourself a disservice. It is the most complex and well written comedy show I've ever seen. It warrants a couple rewatches because there is major foreshadowing. I found references to things that happen in season 3 in season 1. It's like they had every single plot point planned from the start. The running gags are some of the funniest I've ever seen and it is full of quotes that I use in day to day life with my friends.

It's not a comedy that you can have in the background or play on your phone during. It still, after every rewatch, blows me away how layered this show is. So many subtle, tiny things you don't even notice the first time. And hell I'm just talking seasons 1-3, it's almost hard to comprehend the planning and logistics that went into season 4.

It's impressive they were even able to make season 4's story comprehensible with all the actors on different schedules. It's just amazing how they wove that together. Many say it's the worst season and story wise it does get jumbled, but IMO it's the most impressive.

Give a list of 10 shows that are funnier than AD.

To a modern audience or in their day?

btw even though it's one of my 5 favorite shows ever, no show in history will ever top seinfeld as tGOAT comedy. Sorry, can't be done.

I knew someone would say Seinfeld. I honestly think that while Seinfeld is definitely the most influential (strong Seinfeld vibes in the clever writing on AD), I wouldn't call it the funniest. But my definition of "greatest" might be different than yours. To me the greatest comedy is the one that makes me laugh the most, and while still hilarious, Seinfeld shows its age a little bit when I comes to humor. But to me, you can't really compare AD and Seinfeld in significance. AD was doomed on network TV in the stupid age that we live in.

Modern Audience. I'm sure if we were going by that criteria, I love Lucy would probably too the list.

Yeah, you are right. Lucy would be top all time.

Given your criteria I think AD is top 10 but not top 5. IMDB agrees:

They put HIMYM over AD? Wow. I forgot about the Office though, both the UK and US are two of the funniest I've ever seen.

They got it right too. Always Sunny is far and away the best comedy show.

Curb your enthusiasm is great. Larry David has never gotten enough credit.

You said all time in the OP and then said modern day in the thread

Come on man, make up your mind

It's top 10 modern day at best and probably closer to top 50 all time

It's a good but not great show IMO

I said from a modern PERSPECTIVE. How a modern audience would perceive the humor.

I would put South Park first but that is where personal bias comes into play.

I highly disagree. I've seen every episode many many times and still lmao every day when I watch it. It's timeless humor bc it's rooted in everyday things that every one of us has been through or dealt with. People will still be laughing at seinfeld reruns 30 years from now.

Thing about seinfeld is how broad its appeal is. Everyone age 10-90 can watch a few episodes and think it's funny. With AD you can't just catch 1 episode sporadically, you basically have to start from the beginning and watch straight through.

I just don't think there will ever be a show that can touch seinfeld.

I absolutely love Arrested Development; it's my favorite show. That being said, I think you could argue the same for a lot of other shows.
