US corporate giants including Apple, Google, Microsoft, Berkshire Hathaway and Goldman Sachs are looking to invest at least $140bn (£90.2bn, €127.4bn) to shrink their carbon footprints, according to media reports.

Executives from 13 major US corporations are due to announce the investment at the White House on 27 July, in the presence of Secretary of State John Kerry and top administration officials.

Other companies on the list are Bank of America, General Motors, Cargill, Alcoa, Wal-Mart Stores, United Parcel Service, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.

The development was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The committed funds will be utilised to cut emissions, provide financing to environmentally-focused companies, reduce water consumption, and produce 1,600 megawatts of new, renewable energy, which is enough to power nearly 1.3 million homes.

The announcement comes as part of the Obama administration's efforts to bolster private commitments to climate change, ahead of a summit in Paris later in 2015. The White House expects to announce a second round of similar pledges later from more companies, Bloomberg reported.

"As the world looks toward global climate negotiations in Paris this December, American leadership at all levels will be essential," the White House said in a fact sheet.

Later this week, the US Environmental Protection Agency is expected to announce final regulations that aim to reduce carbon emissions from American power plants by 30% over 2005 levels by 2030.

Power plants are the largest single source of carbon pollution in the US, accounting for about one third of all domestic greenhouse gas emissions. The Clean Power Plan will set standards for carbon pollution from power plants, just as we have set limits on power plant emissions of harmful elements.

I know people absolutely hate the "climate change/global warming" debate points, but I don't think it should be out of the realm of anyone's abilities to just treat nature as kindly as possible seeing as we live here. It's no different than cleaning up the house IMO.

If it weren't politicized so much, people wouldn't be as combative as they are about it. Both sides grasp for any one sided science they can find on the issue, never really ever worried about good science. Main stream media and the two-party system will be the death of this country.

Science doesn't have a political side. Go to any natural history museum they have entire exhibits and lectures by the climatologists on this stuff. I attended some in London. It's happening. Pretty soon the deniers will go from "it's a bullshite scam" to "well it's too far gone what can we do now?". Change now.

You're an idiot. You haven't studied one bit of this. Stop trying to look for fellow ignorant peer reviews on a south eastern football message board and go ask a person that studies it.

The climate is cyclical hot and cold, do I belive humans are changing that cycle in some way? Yes, I do but the actual "global warming" they speak of is bs.

And 40 years ago, those people studying it were sure we were headed for a new ice age.

We may still be headed towards one, because sun spots impact our climate more than emissions.

Bad "science" has a political side, you just have to follow the funding. Regardless, I don't think people are hung up on if global warming is happening, they're hung up on if man has any control over it. Regardless of what you believe, we are contributing to a toxic environment and poor air quality, so at the end of the day it's something we'll all benefit from if we can work together and implement sustainable green energy that won't cause financial hardships for your average American.

Wont matter. Climate change is a certainty.

All this is fine and good, I'm not disregarding it all... I honestly wish that these huge corporations would throw at least half of that 140 bn at ending world hunger and clean drinking water for 2/3s of the world... I'm not downplaying their good deed, because honestly they don't have to do anything, just wish they'd allocate in different ways.

Interesting. Microsoft is my primary corporate customer and we have to provide them with monthly statements on their carbon use.
