There were four flags there and I think the Battle Flag was one of them

According to the article there were four total flags. He also said this which is pretty smart IMO.

quote:

Asked his reasons for taking it down and if it included what happened in Charleston last week, the governor said, "Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."

It was.

quote:

On the order of Gov. Robert Bentley, the Confederate battle flag which stands at the foot of the confederate memorial on the state Capitol grounds was taken down this morning.

quote:

After the battle flag – which is at the center of the controversy – was gone, workers began removing three other Civil War era flags

They are the First National Confederate Flag, commonly preferred to as the "Stars and Bars;" the second flag is the Second National Confederate Flag, more commonly known as the "Stainless Banner;" and the last flag standing is the Third National Confederate Flag.

Good for him. Most of those flags on the south weren't hung until desegregation began. So, they are racist. But everyone sees them that way, but enough do to where they shouldn't fly on public land.

I'm feeling really un-Southern right now.

Arkansas hasn't ever flown the confederate flag in any capacity to my knowledge. At least not that I am aware of and most likely not in my lifetime.

I am offended by Volkswagen Beatles. We should probably burn them all.

Damn Jon Stewart and liberal media making a big deal out of confederate flags and demonizing the south. confederate flag is historical and it symbolizes heritage. you don't need to interpret it as an offensive symbol.

Yep. The battle flag wasn't flown above the Capitol building until the 60's. The first time in 1961 on the centennial of the Civil War. It flew for one day and came down. It was put back up there in 1963 the day Robert Kennedy came and met with George Wallace and remained up there until 1993, when it was moved to the monument location.

So why then do you have all of these southern republican governors like Bentley and Hayley speaking out against the flag? I love how people are acting like Democrats are the only ones pushing to take down the flags.

Wanting the flag gone from public buildings =/= demonizing the south. The flag is a symbol of our more regrettable parts of history. I'm proud to be a son of the south, but I'm ready to see the flag go into the history books.

Because everyone lacks the backbone to say anything about it anywhere other than Facebook or message boards. Exactly like everyone else on every other issue that has come up over the past 10 years.

My best friend would tell you that his great great grandfather fought under the flag. Never owned a slave and was poor as dirt. Fought for the confederacy to defend the land that he owned. It genuinely means something different to him.

ETA: By contrast, it doesn't mean anything significant for me.
