They are. People from Alabama tend to talk out of their arse and don't know what they're talking about

I was born in Dothan. I went to college in Mobile. Then I moved to the Birmingham area for 3 years. After that I was in Montgomery for 5. I have lived in DFW, Nashville, and now the FL Panhandle in the last 8 years.

The Southeastern part of the state is very conservative Bible belt. Birmingham is more transplants, so it has a different feel than most of the state. It has more of "New South" thing going now. Mobile is entirely different than anywhere else to me. I am not sure what it is, but it has a different cultural feel. It probably has to do with the history of the area and it feeling more isolated from the rest of the state.

Montgomery just sucks. There seems to be more of a struggle to overcome the past there. They are trying, but it just feels forced. I don't sense an excitement about new things like you see in Birmingham. I think that has to do with the transplant vs. more native Alabamians.

Not sure what was close-minded about my post. I didn't say I absolutely could not live in any other city, though there are a few I absolutely would not move to - Montgomery, Anniston, Gadsden, Jasper, Mobile to name a few. I've either visited those places enough, dated girls from there, or worked in those place to know I wouldn't want to live there.

Other places I'd have to look at on a case by case basis. I'm pretty happy in Birmingham though, so it'd have to be a pretty sweet deal.

I live in Mobile now. I wouldn't put it in the same category as the other cities you mentioned. Mobile is WAAAY more laid back than most other cities in Alabama. I think 12 had the best explanation of the different cities in Alabama.

This is true....Birmingham has more in common with and feels like a northern rustbelt city. Birmingham has more in common with places like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit, or Baltimore than it does other southern cities.

I'm not from Alabama but I did work for an Oil and Gas Company in Tuscaloosa County about a decade ago... Lake Guntersville is considered one of the better Largemouth Bass fishing lakes in the Southeast when the water temp is right... There's also great Smallmouth Bass fishing in the Northwest corner of the state (Pickwick)... The white tail deer population is pretty much out of control statewide which makes for great deer hunting and the Southern part of the state boasts a very large Wild Turkey population... Lastly, there's the fact that you can saltwater fish on the coast and you can quickly see how Alabama is great for any hunter/outoddrs type like myself.

Speaking as someone who has spent quite a lot of time in those cities, I can assure you that this couldn't be further from the truth.

I like Huntsville.

I hate the people who vote in the state as a whole. I say North Alabama should form its own state and take Mobile/Gulf Shores with us. We'll donate the Black Belt to Mississippi.

Mobile/Gulf Coast area is much more laid back in the feel. Nothing like north around Birmingham. I like the Shoals area as well, probably 2nd in line with the laid back and country feel. Then Huntsville, then Bham in ratings. Montgomery.. meh.

Atlanta might be the most overrated city in the South. Traffic is a fricking nightmare at all times.

I think he meant that Bham had more in common with those cities economically. Bham was one of the only true heavy manufacturing cities in the South through much of its history. Very similar to those cities mentioned just on a smaller scale. Birmingham is incredibly unique in that way especially compared to other Deep South cities. Basically no other city quite like it in the Deep South and maybe the entire South in that regard.

I wouldn't trade anywhere in the state of Alabama for where I live in North Alabama. Right now I live in Madison, right outside of Huntsville. Consistently in the top public school systems in the country. Super low crime rate. Will probably move out of Madison into the county after my son graduates, however.

There is great fishing and hunting all over the area. You are only 1.5 hours from Nashville, 1.5 hours from B'ham, 4 hours from ATL, 4 hours from Memphis, 4 hours from Auburn, 2.5 hours from Tuscaloosa, about 2 hours from Chattanooga.
